Beaudoin Street

It used to be that when people talked gentrification in Montreal, The Plateau was the topic of choice. The Plateau is now thoroughly taken over by professionals and yuppies and most of the artists, working class, and students have moved elsewhere. That said, the new target for Montreal gentrification is the industrial neighbourhood of Saint-Henri in the borough of Le Sud-Ouest. I took a trip down to Saint-Henri a few days ago to visit Beaudoin Street; historically one of the poorest streets in the neighbourhood. It's only a few blocks long with an interesting chemistry. On one side, a look up past the highway the uber-wealthy town of Westmont rises above the street. On the street itself, there is an eclectic mix of slightly slanted brick rowhouses and walkups with a few wood building thrown in here and there. On the other end, what was probably the site of a factory now stands new condo developments along the Lachine Canal.
