The City Repair Project

The City Repair project is an organization of volunteers in Portland that works to enhance the places that people live by creating newly-formed public meeting places. Their mission is largely focused on creating the public squares that are intrisic to smart urban planning. Sensing a lack of public space in their city (save for some parks) the City Repair project emerged to transform residential intersections into thriving community-oriented spaces.

This second project is the Memorial Lifehouse, located at SE Taylor and SE 37th Ave. On May 27, 1998, Matthew Scheckel was killed while riding his bike after being hit by a delivery-truck driver who ran a stop sign on SE 37th. After the accident friends created a memorial with a bike frame covered in flowers. In the spring of 2002 City Repair created a more permanent memorial, and with the permission of the property owner on the corner created this lifehouse.

On the end is a wheel planted in the ground that chronics Matt's life and explains what the project is about.

I totally forget where this one is....I remember coming upon it suddenly on my way to the Bipartisan Cafe, which is at 79th and SE Stark.
