BARNOLDSWICK IS A SMALL EX- MILL TOWN ON THE LANCASHIRE/ YORKSHIRE BORDER IN NORTHERN ENGLAND. I SAY EX MILL TOWN, AS COTTON WEAVING WAS THE MAIN INDUSTRY UP UNTILL THE LATE FIFTIES. SINCE THE DECLINE OF COTTON, THE TOWNS INDUSTRY HAS DIVERSIFIED, INTO ENGINEERING, BEDMAKING, PRINTING, ETC, THE LARGEST EMPLOYER BEING ROLLS-ROYCE AERO WORKS. THE TOWN HAS A POPULATION OF ABOUT 12,000 INHABITANTS, WHO ARE "BARLICKERS" THE TOWN LIES ON THE EDGE OF THE TROUGH OF BOLLAND, AND THE YORKSHIRE DALES, BOTH AREAS ARE POPULAR TOURIST SPOTS, AND WELL WORTH A VISIT, AND EXTREMELY POULAR WITH THE HIKING FRATERNITY, ESPECIALLY THE DALES AREA, WHICH HAS SOME WONDERFUL MOORLAND, AND DALES WALKS..... THE TOWN DATES BACK TO SAXON TIMES, AND WAS SETTLED BY A CHAP CALLE BERNULF, HENCE BERNULFS WICK, WICK MEANING VILLAGE, THE CHURCH IS SOME NINE HUNDRED YEARS OLD, SO THERE IS PLENTY OF HISTORY ABOUT THE PLACE, A GREAT LITTLE PLACE TO LIVE.. AND DIE OF COURSE

Gus, on the internet typing in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS is generally considered to be SHOUTING and is, on the whole, unwelcome. Thanks for the pics and info though. Did you take these yourself?

jack: 6th Jun 2006 - 14:43 GMT

GUS BRENNAN: 7th Jun 2006 - 19:57 GMT

hi jamie, yes i know that capital letters are considered to be shouting, i just can`t fathom this one out, internet manners i suppose.i honestly thought that cap. letters would be clearer and easier to read, so for you i will type in a normal manner. no i did not take the pictures, and your welcome to any info. i can supply

i love these pic's. very interesting and nice shots. but who is 'jack' above who was typing in caps, that was not me. if there is another jack posting comments should we put a number after our name.

GUS BRENNAN: 20th Jun 2006 - 16:52 GMT

thanks for your comments jack, as for the other jack, i have not got a clue who he is ,but, does it matter, after all typing anything in caps, is hardly, wait for it, a CAPITAL OFFENCE, i really can`t see what differance it makes, as long as it is not offensive, or abusive, and we can all read and understand what has been typed. or are we fast becoming intrnet typing snobs, god forbid. anyway keep looking, as i will be posting more of bar`lick photo`s, take care gus

I was asked by John Stanley (Stan the man)if i could put this photo on the Barnoldswick site with the hope that someone out there could shed some light on it.
It as come from his late father-in-laws estate, Mr. James McKechnie, Kerris and Heather's father.
We gather that it's Townhead, but the little chap with the ice cream is an unknown and so is the van. Any comments would be very much appreciated.
All the best, Paul.image 15733

From 'what is citynoise?': "What shouldn't I post?

Personal arguments, gang shout-outs, spam/advertising, images harvested directly from Google Image Search, posed family photos, completely abstract images, or anything in ALL-CAPS. These will be mercilessly deleted! Also, if you have a comment on an existing article, please place it in the comments for that article. Why MORE posed family photos? weren't your photos deleted for that already once?

In a nostalgic moment for roots I discovered your great web site. My family came to Barlick in 1939 with the Rover company. I went to Gisburn Road school till 1950. I wrote a biography of my mother and our life in Barlick from 39-60 and it went into the local public library. Wondered if it was still there? Love to hear from anyone I went to school with. I live in Vancouver, Canada. My e-mail: Major9th@energensia. com

Sandra: 15th Mar 2007 - 10:23 GMT

Andrew
Easy does it for me!You are putting me under too much pressure and I then back off.I understand where you are at and I am picking up your pain right now.
I am there myself frequently, but one has to deal with it by chatting and sharing ones feelings.Solving things on an intimate level is not the solution.
You are hurting at the moment- I am here for you on other levels for now...

What a neat looking little wick you have. I chanced apon your site researching Barnoldswick after reading mention of it in Development of Aircraft Engines by Robert Schlaifer. I, too, am in Florida. I would like to put Barnoldswick on a trip agenda, after I get to the Museum of Science and Industry in Kensington. Thanks for the pics.

Pat Kenny: 14th Dec 2007 - 15:49 GMT

I grew up in Barlick. Lived at 24 Avon Drive until 1974 when the family emigrated to Canada. Most of my early memories involve ordinary things like going to Redmans for bacon on a Saturday morning with Mum or going to the pictures and anticipating the choc ice waiting for me at half time (saw my first Elvis pic there...) Playing at Vic Park and picnics at Ghyll (spelling?? yikes!)church hold extra special memories. I think that it's true....Barlick is in the blood. If anyone knows any of my relatives please post a note or two, love to hear any news. Here's the anticpated yet dreary (to those of you who don't recognise any of the names) list: Paul Kenny and family (Uncle) Michael Kenny (Uncle), Julie Hargreaves (friend from Skipton Girls High School) Jill P ??? (flaming red hair, great sense of humour). Well, I won't go...Oppps, too late!
Thanks for the opportunity
