Queens Graffitti

So my friend Cat Penfold (who is a citynoise contributor and junkie) has been asking me for days to post some of my graffitti pictures. I started taking them mostly because I wanted some cool pictures to hang in my office, but I also feel like some of these works are so amazing and so temporary that it would be a shame not to document of them. So here they are.

I found this van parked across the street from P.S. 1 in Long Island City. It was parked in front of an amazing building called 5 Pointz, which is a huge artists space where you can rent out floors inside the building and sign up to paint the outside of the building. More on 5 Pointz later.

This is the one that started it all for me. I saw this one morning while jogging in my neighborhood in Astoria. It was made right after Jam Master Jay was murdered. I think the crew that created it is called the Wallnuts. I thought it was such a great tribute. So I went back to grab my camera and took a bunch of shots. And then decided that I needed to photograph more graffitti like this.

Luckly, when I turned the corner from the Run DMC tribute, I found this. It's a small section of a much larger wall. My next camera upgrade is going to have to have a wide angle lens so I can actually take in the full work.

This is one side of the 5 Pointz building I was talking about earlier. It's not even the best side. You can see it from the 7 train if you're heading into Manhattan. The thing about 5 Pointz is that they're constantly changing the art work on the outside, which gets back to my earlier point about wanting to document some of this stuff before it's gone.

Here are the rules for 5 Pointz and an e-mail address for more information. (And no, I have no affiliation with 5 Pointz and this isn't a sales pitch.) I just thought it was a great idea for street artist to have a place to share their work.
