While I was back in my home town in New Brunswick this week, my mother pulled out some pictures of her trip to Montreal to see Rod Stewart at the old Montreal Fourm in 1979. Most of the pictures were of her and her friends at bars and in the hotel with their 1970s facial hair and colourful pants, however, these three pictures were taken from her hotel room. Based on what I can tell from the first two pictures, the window faced east somewhere between Ste Catherine and Dorchester (now René-Lévesque). The city has changed quite a lot since these pictures were taken so I am at a loss as to where exactly the hotel was situated although, based on the distance from The Sun Life Building and Place Ville-Marie, I'm assuming it was somewhere near the Concordia campus (possibly MacKay, Bishop or Crecent). I am not exactly sure what the function of the building in the third picture was, however, I am almost certain it is now gone.
Unfortunately I did not have access to a scanner so I had to use my digital camera to reproduce the photos and touched them up in Photoshop.

ahh, nice. i love it when people post older photos... it would be interesting to do a "then and now" comparison with these...

This picture seems to be taken about 5 blocks west of The Sun Life building, from an upper floor of what is now the Quality Inn on Crescent Street or More likely the building that used to be the YWCA in downtown Montreal(or some building that is no longer there situated somewhere between the two). Use the Google map set to hybrid and you will see what I mean. The building with the copper(green) around the upper floor appears to be the building north of dorchester park that currently houses HMV and the Montreal tourist bureau and the tall building in front of and slightly to the right of the Sunlife is probably the Sheraton. The big red building is mostly gone now and is probably where the large parking lot in front of the bell center is currently located. I think a small piece of that huge red brick building(Factory?) still exists and is a restaurant(don't know the current name of the restaurant - it used to be "Moes")located across Mountain Street(De La Montagne) almost directly in line with the west end of De La Gauchetiere Street West.

Photos were all taken from the Maritime Plaza Hotel, northwest corner of Guy and Dorchester (the latter street has since been renamed after a cursed separatist politician). The third photo is of the Desjardins seafood restaurant. The building's still there, but the restaurant folded around 2000. Seafood restaurants tend to fail in Montreal.

What a surprise! I wish someone would do a before and after as was suggested. I used to live in Montreal and probably wouldn't recognize it anymore. I heard that Ben's, Ruby Foo's and Desjardins had all closed. That is a true shame, especially Desjardins. Montreal has/had some fabulous restaurants with a huge ethnic diversity. I would not like to go back there now to see how it has gone all downhill.
