Two Strips of Dirt

- CE - Monday, October 8th, 2007 : goo

I was trying to enjoy the few last days of warm weather before winter takes hold by biking around some of the more obscure parts of the city. While in , an interesting but relatively neglected part of the city between isolated by railroad tracks on the north and south sides, I came across this very rare unpaved alley that ran for a mere one block. I wonder how this one particular alley managed to avoid paving.

serlingrod: cool find.

Maybe it actually belongs to the railroad.

CE: 9th Oct 2007 - 03:38 GMT

This alley runs north/south whereas the railway runs east/west (by Montreal definitions which anyone from Montreal knows have nothing to do with what a compass might tell you). The trees that can bee seen in the distance are actually the buffer between the neighbourhood and the tracks.

jack: i feel i can run down that alley.

colavitos ghost: this is a really beautiful scene!

EvilGentleman: 9th Oct 2007 - 20:54 GMT

Maybe all the adjoining homes own the alley, and they could not agree whether to pave it with asphalt or concrete.

Neglected doesn't apply to Lower NDG. The city councillor is the mayor's brother and it has benefited from that connection, as witnessed by a $4 million new community center, St. James has been totally rebuilt, hundreds of new housing units have been added and the area has been at the center of the superhospital replanning storm.

Been down that alley many times. Nice Italian neighborhood. Many well kept flower and vegetable gardens. Yes, and a brand new Community centre down there...St. Raymonds....and of course the best Italian Bakery (NDG Bakery)...and let us not forget the best Italian sausage subs in Montreal at Momesso's. Great part of town...and that's not the only alley that has been kept a semi-greenspace.

you said theres tracks to the north and south?
that seems incorrect...
also theres a few non paved alleys in ndg..

pnav: 20th Dec 2007 - 20:09 GMT

That is my laneway! My house is half way down on the left. Yeah, that really is a cool part of NDG. This is the lane between Belgrave (west) and Clifton (east), with the tracks to the North and Upper Lachine road to the south.

I lived for 25 years above the tracks belgrave clifton acroos the tracks from here before a life of drugs and crime chased me to vancouver ndg was heaven to grow up in!!!The hot summer nights I googled daniel o connel school and found nothing!!Ask anyone over 40 if they remember that school??prudhomme and cote st antoine decarie
