Hangman's Alley

Leftover from an age before motor vehicles. A time when streets didn't need to be of any specific width. Peculiar alleyways. I think i have sen this particular alleayway in a painting named Tinker's Alley, although the street sign describes it as Lindsey Court.

The cobbled area now adjacent to the town library is where the locally famous executuioner William Marwood once practiced his gruesome trade. It was perhaps more of a morbid hobby however, as he had a day job as a shoemaker. There is an old house on church lane which bears a plaque claiming itself to be his home.

William's contribution to society involved executing over 350 men and women across the country

One particular cobble caught my eye. Partly due to it's shape and partly due to it seemingly having been painted red at one time. It seems somehow fitting of it's environs.

There is a blue plaque on a wall here declaring itself to be the line of the original roman wall of Banovallum. I have heard that a surviving section of wall exists within the library on wharf road! I'll have to go have a look and see if this is true.
