Sculpture Garden: A Lifetime Ahead

- Jamie - Sunday, May 1st, 2005 : goo

I found this quaint little at in Spalding on . What follows is a paraphrasing of what i read on the information board:

Almost all scientists now agree that the earth's climate is changing, primarlily due to increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases caused by the use of fossil fuels and deforestation. This contemporary garden by and Richard holmes combines several planting styles including Exotic (to take advantage of milder winters and reduced frosts), Mediterranean (able to deal with summer droughts) as well as a bog garden, benefiting from warmer, waterlogged winters.

Planting is juxtaposed againts imaginative sculpture including one comprised entirely of exhausts - the greatest contributors of Carbon Dioxide - as well as an interesting water feature made from several ceramic electricity insulators, more commonly found high up on electricity pylons which transmit the electricity generated by the burning of fossil fuels.

A totemic windmill structure pays reference to one natural sustainable energy resource. Carved wooden totem poles interpret the work of the generation set to live 'a lifetime ahead', depicting their hopes for tomorrow's world, and are naturally made of wood obtained from a sustainable source.
