West Kortright Centre Pet Parade

- GGP - Monday, July 18th, 2005 : goo

[previous] :: [next]

The West Kortright Centre is a wonderful old church that for the past 30 years has been a local cultural institution.

We attended the Centre's 30th anniversary shindig a couple of weeks ago. The Pet Parade (really more like a pet contest) was a highlight, one of the best cultural events any of us had attended in a long, long time.

It was a beautiful day for a rural celebration.

image 3644
Contestants waited patiently for their turn to walk before the judges, but there was tension in the air.

image 3645
A girl and her fluffball.

image 3646
The "Tadpole Trio" shows their stuff. When interviewed by the judges, they explained that they first met their pets in a puddle behind their house. (This team later took the prize in the category of "Pet With The Most Potential.")

A contestant balks at the notion of jumping through a hoop.

image 3648
A contestant is interviewed about the eating habits of his pet rabbit. (Grass, lettuce, carrots--the usual fare.)

image 3649
The judges examine a beetle named Rick.

image 3650
Some creative costuming lent color to the event.

A boy and his dog.

image 3652
Dapper the Alpaca balks at the notion of stepping into the ring.

image 3653
Bonus Alpaca shot!

image 3654
A close-up of Rick the beetle. (My personal favorite.)

image 3655
This young fellow was VERY serious about his lizard, whom he had acquired the week before.

image 3659
We were a bit worried that the bunny was being squeezed a bit too tight, but it seem to have survived all the excitement.

image 3656
A dog desires the crickets in the lizard cage. (Or is merely the carrots that hold such allure?)

image 3657
A proud winner with his medal. Everyone who entered was awarded a prize, uniquely named for their particular pet's attributes and/or abilities.

image 3658 Check out the West Kortright Centre next time you're in the neighborhood! It's a really great place.

elaine: how lovely, sigh...

now this is a great article. i love the what the fuck! look on the alpaca's face as they're trying to lead him onto the stage. rick is a pretty hilarious name for a beetle too. i wonder if they call him richard when he's misbehaving.

GGP: 19th Jul 2005 - 02:15 GMT

rick won the "ringo starr award" that night, in reference to RICHARD Starkey, the Beatle, which I now realize was a pretty good double-entendre--I only got the single (beetle) entendre that evening. and yeah, that noble alpaca was so not having it that day!! we did learn that when angry or threatened, alpacas spit green bile and it gets greener depending on how upset they are.

jeeff: i do the same thing.

of course, i am a sucker for the critters, but i just had to say, i love the first pic, it's got a formal/abstract quality which drives the eye into looking at it's elements - the perfect fade of the sky or the balloon, the string-ness of the string, which is very cool

I've fallen for the alpaca! What eyes! :-D
These photos are great!

it is lovely. The pictures seem exceptionally bright...is it the eye, the location, the camera? the sun? Maybe just a lot of colors in the scenes...

yay! i love going to the central park zoo to see the alpacas and other animals there in the kids/petting part. you never get too old for that sort of stuff :)

and rick the beetle, winning hte "ringo star" award totally cracked me up. thanks!

GGP: 20th Jul 2005 - 14:00 GMT

i grew up going to the central park zoo. one of the best things there--I think it's gone now--was a big blue cement whale whose gaping mouth you could walk into. Inside, where the whale's throat would be, was a huge goldfish tank. It was very cool. My only bad experience there was being nipped by a Shetland pony. They're kind of cranky, but I would be too if I lived in the zoo.

the bklyn zoo is kind of fun. especially on a rainy day to see the sea lions. sometimes, on rainy quiet days, you can hear them barking when you're at the botanic gardens.
