Ithaca Is Gorgeous!

I like how you caught the change of depth color change (light green on top, dark green on the bottom) on the shot of small falls before Taughannock Falls. Even on a grey day you found plenty of color. Nice!

looks like a fun roadtrip. i just took a trip up to upstate this past summer, we went to check out the falls in ithica but the one we visited- who's name i don't recall was all dried up to the surprise of myself and the local upstate ny peeps i went with.

I went into the the old ithaca gun factory a few times an it was great...of course illegal but awlsome. very spooky but also very adventures. at the gun factory they have a place called gobblins alley and it is really cool when you get a chance you should def go in there but dont get caught. did you go to the 1st damn?? In the summer time make sure you go there and you dont have any pics of the gorge near the Ithaca commons. Thats a beauty

Thanks for the great photos! I grew up in Ithaca, been in CA for 23 years. My Dad worked at Ithaca Gun, and we used to make that climb up the falls all the time. There's tunnels from an abandonded hydro-electric generator next to the falls that are REALLY spooky! Maybe someday I'll get a chance to visit...

Great story and pictures. I grew up on E. Lincoln St. & Aurora St. If you look in the reflection of the windows in the 'Wig Shop' picture, you will see the house I grew up in (white with black shutters). I worked that Ithaca Gun for a few years after the Army. I now live in California, but I will retire back in Ithaca someday. Again, great pictures.

These shots remind me of how cold it gets there in the winter. I too grew up in Ithaca and worked at the Gun Co. briefly (63-64) and Taughannock State Park, incidentally, before migrating west like others posting here. I'm sure we climbed all over most of the gorges in the area. Haven't been back since '68, but hope to some day. Sure was a great place to grow up.

Thanks for the short "vacation". I always say, if you can't afford a vacation, you can always take an ego trip-they are fast free and instantaneous. With your photos, I got the vacation without leaving Texas. Good shots by the way.

I grew up in Ithaca in the 50's. It was a great time to be a young kid growing up on South Hill. I graduated Ithaca High School in 1960, and returned each summer to work at Cornell University to help pay my way through college. I have many fond memories of good times and good friends.

I too lived in Upstate and migrated to California.(winter SUX)
If any of yall heard of "The second dam" in Ithaca
I am a legitimate maniac that jumped from the highest
cliff there into the deep water next to the dam and lived to tell about it. I am wondering the height of The Second Dam?
I am sure it was at LEAST 100 ft.
The hike in to the dam was "legal" (not POSTED) back in 1980.
Don't know if it still is...but MAN....the Rope-SWING was OUT OF THIS WORLD!

I grew up in Ithaca. B.1924. Grad IHS 1940. Then to Cornell. Then WW II. Back to Cornell. Worked for a short time at Ithaca Gun in 1950. Left Ithaca. Lived south hill first, then N. Aurora St, Cascadilla Ave, later Falls St. Many memories! Into genealogy. Would love to correspond w/ "old" Ithacans.
