Graf Trux 9: Return of the Original Graf Trux....
[previous] :: [next]
three years ago i put together a whimsical article for citynoise titled "graf trux", never suspecting that it might somehow catch on and inspire a multitude of similar citynoise articles in the years to come. since then, it's been pretty humbling to see others take up the baton and present graf trux from all over the country and the world, including new york, brooklyn, portland, paris, and even russia. each successive graf trux article has delivered surprise and delight. anyway, at long last, after a too-long interval, i'm returning with a new sampling of SF's best graf trux--or at least the ones i've managed to catch when i've had my camera in hand. (some amazing specimens have thus far evaded my lens...but i'll get 'em soon enough!) san francisco has more than its fair share of chilly grey days, and oddly enough, many of them seem to find us in midsummer. which is why we honor those graf trux that know how to let the sunshine (and starlight) through.
ribity's perpetually surprised (and increasingly controversial: www.sfist.com/archives/2005/02/08/has_ribity_gone_too_far.php
she's a flamboyant girl, always dressed too loudly for the quiet, demure neighborhood in which she resides. her block is otherwise occupied by staid, conservative family vehicles that can only admit to envying her dramatic bohemian flair in their deepest, wildest, automotive dreams.
meanwhile, in the mission district, even so-called "mommy vans" have an opportunity to get dressed in polychromatic krylon finery for all to praise and admire. every time this car rolls up to the elementary school, all the kids cheer.
the streets of san francisco shiver and quake when big steel rumbles into town....
like a street character with tourette's syndrome, this truck puts an unsubtle slice of subconscious rambling ("cry me a river! twister! i got five on it! dry hump!") out on public display, along with an odd bit of quasi-avian dream imagery. i can't wait to see what it will say next.
believe it or not this appears to be a commissioned piece for a moving van. if we ever buckle down and decide to move out to the suburbs, i'd like to hire this guy to move our belongings, if only to give my prospective neighbors a shock. "honey, look across the street! i think we got a pimp moving in!" who knows, maybe we'll end up having the whole cul-de-sac to ourselves....
well, as you know, what goes around, comes around. so we'll conclude this small display with a bit of "graf trux graf." and that's my challenge going forward, folks: now that we've figured out the art of painting delivery vehicles, it's time to put the trucks themselves back on the walls (or, in this case, fences). let the "graf trux graf" articles commence! cheers, moe for more photographs of urban art and street color (plus also an eclectic selection of music mp3s and commentary about same) see my mp3blogjournalthing: moebius_rex.livejournal.com/ This article has been viewed 8894 times in the last 3 years Jamie: 27th Jul 2005 - 08:00 GMTGreat to see you back here moe; and awesome photos. Hope you'll be sticking around elaine: 27th Jul 2005 - 09:13 GMTtastic post. i saw a fire in san francisco once, those wooden houses sure produce some big licky flames. when i got home i told a lady fireperson about it, and that is when i realised what total firebugs firefighters are - usually a taciturn character, her eyes lit up and she wanted to know all about it, including, of course, how many firemen and trucks were there Peter: 27th Jul 2005 - 13:48 GMTpunk rock! vive la moerex and this crazy graf trux thing he started! :D fuzzytank: 27th Jul 2005 - 16:01 GMToh hell yeah ...when we drove all thru san fran just recently we didnt have time to stop an catch any trucks and well, lookin for these beats the crap outta bird watchin in the city ;) Yourpony: 27th Jul 2005 - 16:14 GMThot trucks!! check out Kenyan matatus--small buses that serve as public transport, usually covered with paintings and named after hip-hop stars. This one's called Ziggy!
anchor_dragging: 27th Jul 2005 - 16:15 GMTYeah that's Ribity on Shotwell Jimmy's van. I like those frog characters a lot. MoeRex: 27th Jul 2005 - 17:29 GMTyourpony: cool! yeah, that reminds me of the jeepneys i used to ride in when i lived in the philippines as a kid. sure would be great if taxi drivers in the us could get away with doing the same.... www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/World/Philippines.html rosie: 29th Jul 2005 - 18:41 GMT*wandered over from 'criminalart' on LJ* Love these pictures and the commentary is funny as hell. :) Moebius Rex: 1st Aug 2005 - 19:09 GMTSasha: I'm pretty sure it's at the intersection of 14th Street and South Van Ness Avenue. The fence is actually a gate into the repair yard of an auto body shop or similar company. The rest of the yard is surrounded by a corrugated metal fence that has been decorated with some really colorful graf pieces, all commissioned. Moebius Rex: 21st Oct 2005 - 21:35 GMTNot that anyone cares, but I just discovered that "I Got 5 On It" (see third-from-the-last pic, above) was a hit 1995 rap anthem by Da Luniz, a Yay Area hip-hop collective. The remix of the track included Humpty Hump and Shock G from the Digital Underground as well as the legendary E-40. Term means "I've got my hands on it" (typically "it" is a weed stash or 40 oz, and you say the phrase when you're relaxed and in party mode). Peter: 22nd Oct 2005 - 02:03 GMTtotally, moe! that song is a classic, heh. sine saw shock g and humpty do that tune in atlanta. and you know those giant foam "#1" hands they have in the crowds at ballgames? they had those, but instead of 1, they were 5. they rapped and waved em around on stage. i got 5 on a grip a deez, yo!
Turfdraagster: 24th Mar 2006 - 11:33 GMTcemtral america, specifically panama have the awesome custom busses. you try to ride the one thats the most outta control. the untagged ones are for some reason scary and unsafe. they must be missing the mojo... Comment on this article..[previous] :: [next] |
