Ugly, Heritage, or Both?

- Cameo - Monday, September 11th, 2006 : goo

What is it about Canada and our passion to declare ugly industrial buildings Heritage or Historical sites?

This huge derelict is the last remaining building, which was part of the Collingwood Shipyards. The shipyards last ship built in these yards was launched in 1985, and the buildings and heavy equipment have slowly been disappearing ever since.

It would seem that the only use for it now is a landmark for the recreational boaters who use Collingwood harbour, or as a great “forbidden” place to explore.

Here are a few pictures from my up close inspection as I spent the night on a boat in the harbour, in between races.

3 views from the boat I was on tied up on the sea-wall:

And here we have 3 young ladds going after a rather new bicycle that looks like it was hidden because of a prank:

Well why is it that, some always have to find fault? If you don't like it fine, but for crying out loud don't try to crams your views down our throats! As a child growing up in Collingwood in the 50's everyone had different memories of the elevator. I remember catching my very 1st fish there, just behind it. Is it a historical shrine, probably not. Still think how much it would cost to destroy the elevator??? Those walls are steel reinforced concrete, and the asbestos from inside....wouldn't be worth the risk to destroy it.
