elaine: 23rd Jun 2005 - 21:20 GMT

the clue is in the title, peter! i would be very surprised if they did anything less than a total razing and rebuild, this place is banjaxed

Peter: oh, derrr! i see now, heh.

I like progression to the smoky revelation...and the deconstruction/fracturing at the end. It reminds me of this brownstone in Greenwich Village that got blown up, by accident if I remember correctly, in the 1970s, I think there was a Weather Underground bomb factory in the basement...Dustin Hoffman lived next door...anway, when the building was rebuilt, the owner put in a bay window that juts out in a kind of triangle from the facade, a reference to the explosive past, I believe...for years there's been a stuffed bear in that window, dressed in different costumes for different occasions...last week it was wearing a NY Yankees baseball uniform...signs o' the times. Digression, sorry--but nice pics! Btw, Elaine, how did the Claude Lorrrain glasses you mentioned a while ago work? Were they like eyeglasses? Installed, like stained glass? Or did people just carry around their own artsy window on the world?? Or perhaps the servant carried it...

kc - yeah, it was an accident. the weather undergrounders were building a bomb and the three doing it accidentally blew up themselves:

i read about claude glasses a long time ago, and from memory thought they were attached to carriages so you could watch the world go by 'framed' but i am not so sure about that now cos i recently saw on TV a selection of them being used to look at landscapes and they were hand held, from about an inch to three in diameter and coloured (remember, this is way before photography or film or anything) to alter the feel of the landscape. they showed orange and green ones which gave a sunny poloroidy feel, and a blue one which was v frosty looking, and took away the colour. fantastic, really
