Walk along Frankford Avenue in the Fishtown section of Philadelphia and you'll find several interesting bike racks created by local artists. The ArtRacks project was started several years ago by the New Kensington Community Development Corporation to promote local artists, biking, and local businesses.
19th Century Bike Rack @ Eagle One Credit Union, Frankford and Susquehanna
Chair Rack at The Garden Center, Frankford and Berks
Truck Parts Rack @ The Bicycle Stable, Frankford and Belgrade
Bicycle Icon Rack @ Johnny Brenda's, Frankford and Girard
Chain Ring Rack @ Palmer Park, Frankford and Palmer
Fish Rack @ Circle Thrift, Frankford and Norris. This one was actually not done through the ArtRacks program, but rather purchased by the crew at the thrift store because they liked the idea so much.

Amazing. My main thought is: why don't we have something like this going on in NYC? We have neither the quantity nor quality of bike racks that other cities--Philly, Pittsburgh, others---have. This is a gap that clearly needs to be filled.

Do people even bike alot in NYC? I've taken my bike on the Chinatown Bus from Philly to NY many a times, and every visit I'm always amazed at how few fellow bikers I see. Maybe its the intimidating traffic of Manhattan? I've noticed more in Brooklyn, but not nearly as many as Phila. Here you'll spot a cute girl on a vintage Schwinn every couple minutes. That isn't to say we're a "bike-friendly" city....our motorists are the pits! We do rock the bike racks though....

You bet there are a lot of regular bikers---over a 100,000 a day--I heard this number a while ago, but I think it still holds.
Its just a matter of diffusion. NYC is much bigger, and you are less likely to see them wherever you happen to be. Except of course if you are on a greenway.

colvatios ghost - Circle Thrift is actually owned by the church Circle of Hope, which occupies the 2nd floor and the building next to it. thanks for the link Carl.

Actually, Serlingrod, that's Cart--CartLegger, as in "mapwalker". But its in Swedish. As to why its in Swedish, thats a story for another place.

just tonight i saw the chain ring rack, 'bike tree' outside johnny brenda's (when it's fully populated, you'll see what i mean by 'tree'), and chair rack. all of these are well-done.
