Kenton's Bunyun

author: serlingrod : Portland, OR

The Paul Bunyun statue located at N Interstate Ave & N Denver Ave in the Kenton neighorhood of Portland. This post inspired by JoeyD's Babe's Muffler post. Paul isn't selling mufflers though...just choppin' some ol' Northwest timber. I don't know which Babe is cooler...the muffler man of San Jose, or Mr. Bunyan's blue ox.

The City Repair Project

author: serlingrod : Portland, OR

image 25377
The City Repair project is an organization of volunteers in Portland that works to enhance the places that people live by creating newly-formed public meeting places. Their mission is largely focused on creating the public squares that are intrisic to smart urban planning. Sensing a lack of public space in their city (save for some parks) the City Repair project emerged to transform residential intersections into thriving community-oriented spaces. This first project is Sunnyside Piaza, located at intersection of SE Yamhill and SE 33rd. This second project is the Memorial Lifehouse, located at SE Taylor and SE 37th Ave. On...

Alberta Arts Corridor

author: serlingrod : Portland, OR

image 25175
In rapidly-gentrifying Northeast Portland, Alberta Street serves as the barometer of what's occuring in the newly emerging local arts scene. The "Alberta Arts Corridor" runs approximately between NE 12th and NE 31st Aves, cutting through the traditionally African-American neighborhoods of King, Sabin, Vernon, and Concordia.

Dignity Village

author: serlingrod : Portland, OR

image 25092
In the upper part of North Portland nessled between a Dept. of Corrections prison facility and the PDX Airport lies a homeless commune known as Dignity Village. Several years ago upon discovering that the City of Portland had expressly written into its charter the allowance of not one but TWO land trusts for homeless settlements, and realizing that they currently had ZERO, several homeless decided to organize. What resulted was a struggle between the homeless, Mayor Potter, and City Council to provide these folks with a respectable piece of land. Unfortunately what they were given was a few acres on...

The Faces of Southwest Portland

author: serlingrod : Portland, OR

image 25040
I spent this past week in Portland for a community development conference, and spent plenty of time exploring the many interesting parts of the city. PDX is split up into quadrants named for their geographic proximity to the Willamette River, dividing the city between west and east, and Burnside Street, which seperates north and south. Southwest is the city center - think office towers and hotels. While most of the more happening residential areas are on the east side of the Willamette, the Southwest is the best place in town to do some good people-watching.
