Sardinia is an island awash in history. Human remains dating back 250,000 years have been discovered there, and through the centuries Sardinia has been ruled over by many a Mediterranean power. In Alghero, in the northwest part of the island, the dominant historical remnants date back to the Gothic period, when the Spanish kingdom of Aragon ruled Sardinia.
