Cities are shaped not just by people, but by time itself. Even something as permanent as death is pliable to the drift of time and tide.
In this case, its the Jewish Eastern European community that once dominated East New York; where Jewish mobsters once held sway, and where my own family got their start in America—bakers, not gangsters. But they are all gone now, and likewise their memory fades, even the memory of their memory.

The FDNY may have a point. This is wasteful, dangerous, and not so safe.

Community Gardens are an oasis in the fabric of the city. They dot formerly vacant lots and open spaces across the city.
The biggest community garden is at Floyd Bennett Field at far edge of Brooklyn, on Jamaica Bay. It is their that 500 community gardens nuzzle up just off of the old tarmac.
Their verdant acreage of these little plots is a patchwork tribute to individual expression.
But some voices may go to far in the eyes of the authorities.
