Small Town Gothic

I hadn't been to St. Andrews in eight years. I didn't see the passage of time much, except in the lines on my grandparents' faces. St. Andrews is an old Loyalist town on the Bay of Fundy. It's full of regal old clapboard houses and churches painted gleaming white, with the Algonquin up on the hill. Most of it owned by rich Americans. Funny what money can do.

The wharf is new, rebuilt after a suicidal boat owner set the old one ablaze with a spark from his welding torch. His boat was being repossessed. The volunteer firefighters who responded drove their truck out too far and the flames swept through the piles underneath, ultimately engulfing the truck (and nearly the men too).

Now the wharf is rebuilt, but not busy. The tourist season hasn't hit yet. The fish are all gone and Passamaquoddy Bay is contaminated, though Pa still digs clams sometimes. What has he got to lose? It's beautiful here.

St. Andrews is one of my favorite places, I grew up just down the road in St.Stephen., I have many wonderful memories of St.Andrews., My boyfriend Ken loves the place too, beats the fast paced hustle & bustle of Montreal where he's been living for too long.We plan to get down in the spring.
We now live in Rothesay, NB.
