Call Out Gouranga!
Browsing articles in The Motorways OF The United Kingdom - [previous] :: [next]A word that appears on bridges across motorways and railways all over the UK. It's only purpose to annoy drivers who are left with a nagging curiosity for the rest of their day until the next time it ceases to become important once again.
Gouranga meaning "Golden One" in Sanskrit refers to the last avartar of god who descended to earth 500 years ago in India. This incarnation a monk named Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was golden in complexion. He demonstrated how by chanting hare krishna mantra the soul is noticably cleansed. He showed man the true path to the attainment of perfection.
Some believe the word is derived from Anglo-Saxon "Go Range" meaning to travel in peace, it goes on to explain that peace can only be obtained by moving over to ones left if another traveller approaches from behind. Failure to do this results in a curse being put onto the offender, the curse consists of any male instantly aquiring minute genitals, and any offending female becoming instantly frigid.

Gene Punckbowee: 20th Jul 2006 - 17:47 GMTI got your email and was kind of puzzled by it. But after doing a Google search on Gouranga found this. I guess it'd be more interesting to yell Gouranga instead of Serenity Now while in traffic. If anyone else hears you, they won't know what it means so you'll freak them out. Thanks for sharing this. I just suspected it was the name of a company that made the bridge or something. Today it caught my mind again after seeing it on a bridge in Manchester,so decided to Google it. Got a Wikipedia page, and that directed me here. How strange though that the bridge I saw it on which made me search is the one in the first picture here going over Upper Brook Street near Manc city centre!!
