Re: Untitled

I've lived in portland all my life and I don't think I've ever seen this gas station.

fuzzytank: 30th Mar 2005 - 00:59 GMT

yeah you kinda miss it if you drive by during the day. that view is from the side street looking west with Lombard running along the right side of the frame.

Signal Gasoline was the sponsor of the radio show 'The Whistler' back in the days before tv, when radio was king.

It's weird... I'm actually listening to 'The Whistler' right now on internet radio, and heard this ad (which wasn't edited out), so decided to google it and see if there were any remnants of this piece of postwar consumerism left...

ea: 27th Oct 2005 - 16:10 GMT

just in the last several months it's been converted to a restaurant. there's a giant stainless steel vent hood in the middle of the space visible through all the garage doors from the street. only reason to have that much venting's gotta mean bbq

Weird... i got here through internet radio too... its like two years since these other posts... i wonder how many hits this site has got from that... by the way those radio dramas and sitcoms are pretty cool... i'm getting addicted

I've got a bunch of "the Whistler" on my iPod (bought from a link on boingboing). And I was just listening to "War of the Worlds" by Mercury theatre. Fantastic.

Ross Archer: 26th May 2007 - 17:11 GMT

Yup, "Whistler", Internet Radio, and Google. Because it takes extra quality to go farther. ;)

Gary, Michigan: 27th May 2007 - 13:35 GMT

I also heard this ad on The Whistler, but heard it on my XM radio, channel 164, which plays nothing but old time radio shows like The Whistler, Lone Ranger, Green Hornet, Fibber McGee & Molly, The Great Gildersleeve, Father Knows Best, etc. Thank you for posting this great picture!!!

I heard about Signal Gasoline because of the Whistler also. Got three MP3 disk with more than 300 Episodes altogether. Each disk cost $5.00 plus shipping.

Likewise, just heard about Signal Gasoline on the Sirius old-time radio channel.

When was the photograph above taken? By the price of the cigarettes on the sign, it can't be too old.

Are there still Signal gasoline stations in business?

I found this also by a search engine. I am a history buff and did some research. Signal Oil went through a lot of mergers and divestitures before all was said and done. AlliedSignal was created through a 1985 merger of Allied Chemical & Dye Corporation and Signal Oil, the company renamed to AlliedSignal on September 19, 1985. The company's involvement in aerospace stems from a previous merger between Signal Oil and the Garrett Corporation in 1968. After that merger, aviation became the company's largest division.

In 1999. AlliedSignal acquired Honeywell and took its more-recognizable name.

As of 2006, its automotive products include Fram Filters, Autolite Spark Plugs and Prestone Anti-Freeze. Both Fram and Autolite were AlliedSignal brands since 1973, purchased from other companies by Garrett's Bendix division. The Prestone brand was acquired in the late 1990s.

As far as the gas stations, Humble Oil (Now Exxon) purchased a large number of Stations from Signal Oil in 1967. I suspect that before the merger with the Garrett Corporation in 1968, all of the stations had been sold to other gas companies.

Hi,
I found this on Ask whilst listening to The Whistler. What a great program. Thanks for the history explanation on what happened to Signal. I came from California, and lived many years in Washington and never heard of Signal. Guess I am too young. The Whistler can be heard on Vintage Radio.
