Actually, I cannot place it. But the description you gave tells me I have must have overlooked this one. Maybe it's along one of those stretches of the bike trail where I tend to ride fast. Gotta be careful now, too. The cops have scooters to catch speeders on the bike trails.

speeders on the bike trails? theres a bike speed-limit? do they use radar? are you supposed to have a bike speedometer or something? heh...

All I know, is I have seen a lot of the little speed limit signs along the bike trails, usually proclaiming a limit of 20 km per hour. I confess that I have not been out on the trails yet this year, but I cannot imagine that they have all suddenly disappeared. And yeah, the cops have been using scooters on the bike trails since at least the mid-1990's.

I'm not actually sure if they usually stop speeders, but given the fact that there are posted speed limits and a police presence, I am pretty sure it happens. Of course, most people speed and the cops never seem to care. Pretty much the same as what happens with cars on the roads.

Bike speedometer? Hmmm, not sure if they are mandatory or not, but I somehow doubt it. Radar would be fun to see, and I bet it would work, since I know my bike sets off the automated digital radar billboard sign here in Dorval that the city keeps moving around to different areas, in order to make people more aware of the speeds they are travelling, and thus reduce speeding. It is meant for cars, but it detects bikes, too.

Headlights and tail lights are required at night, especially on city streets. I got a ticket for that once, and it really pissed me off. The cops stopped me riding down Notre-Dame in the St-Henri district at 2 AM one night back in 1995. They seemed to be fine enough until I produced my ID, which revealed the fact that I lived in Kahnawake. They asked, "Are you Indian?" (I look white) When I said yes, they said, "Well, you should drive dangerously like this on your reserve. We have laws here. We will have to give you a ticket." While they were writing my ticket, a group of six more bikes went by, going a lot faster and weaving all over the road. None of them had headlights, and a couple did not even have reflectors, which I did have. But one of them was wearing a Quebec flag on his T-shirt, so the cops just waved at them and smiled.

And they wonder why people set their cruisers on fire, or why most of their "problems" come from minorities, like natives, blacks or English-speakers. Oh well. I still believe most cops are good people, but they really need to weed out the idiots.
