Ikea's Watery Shadow

- CartLegger - Monday, February 4th, 2008 : goo

[previous] :: [next]

I've been watching the looming hulk of Ikea rising for a year now over the old docks of Red Hook. But its been a while since I've seen its progress. I was amazed at how far construction has proceeded since my first post on this once neglected site. Take this as an update, only this one looking not up, but down, at an uncertain future for Red Hook.

i was in last weekend for the idiotarod and overheard tales of up-and-coming places pulling out of , due to the expected "influx" of folks not happening as expected/predicted... a shame. classic new york overspectulation...

and didn't they halt water-taxi service to the fairway there? another shame...

Oh IKEA, what to do with thee? You offer great bargains on such aesthetically-pleasing, easy to assemble furniture, yet you continue to embrace the Walton-esque big box development model.....

Our IKEA in Philly is a nightmare. It's located along the Delaware waterfront in South Philly near Pennsport, a residential area that's seen way too much big box development lately (i.e. WAL-MART). Seems alot like what's going on in Red Hook...isloated from public transit and resulting in way too much traffic. And to top it off, the PA State Gaming Board has situated a proposed CASINO on a waterfront parcel just behind IKEA and WAL-MART. Talk about "looking down"...

This also reminds me of the Hope Depot that's situated in Jersey right before you enter the Holland Tunnel....

We were lucky here. Our IKEA is located in a commercial/industrial area wedged between two highways and the airport. Exactly where it belongs.
