Leo the Lion
[previous] :: [next]Many many years ago, although now that I think about it, it wasn't all that many years ago, lets say a few years ago, or not the long past but rather my past, I was brought into the Highway Theatre on Kings Highway, between West 6th street and West 7th street. It was a Wednesday because the women got a dish for coming and Wednesday was dish set night at the movies and so my mother sat me next to her and gave me my snack and I sat there listening to the jabbering of all the mommies and grandmothers who were alive back then, as they greeted friends and chatted endlessly about their families. And I sat there as they reached over the burgundy velour seats to squeeze my cheeks and mush my hair and I smiled because I knew all of these women, who would offer me snacks and things to keep me happy and silent. As the theatre grew dim into darkness and this loud sound, this orchestration of music of heraldry as if Moses himself was entering the building, I sat there and watched with excitement as the curtains withdrew and the screen was alive with action and there was this Egyptian-type architecturally-designed concrete-type building with rounded tops and a platform that jutted directly in front of you and then it horror I saw a lion run and jump onto the platform and roar, I mean ROAR, and I was terrified at the sight of this man eating creature running into my face. It was Leo the Lion, MGM's symbol of the king of the movie jungle and today you can see that lion as you begin to watch any movie from MGM. But lo and behold that was then and this is now and Leo has long eaten his last wildebeest... By the way, where the hell did this ugly looking animal ever come from, did you ever really look closely at a wildebeest, and why is everyone starving in Africa when they have these ugly looking cows grazing around doing nothing but becoming dinner for other animals? Why doesn't someone open a business and slaughter these things and feed these poor people? Well, getting back to Leo, he has since passed on and now sleeps in the earth and I found that patch of earth and here is a snapshot of that final resting place for Leo:
