The name "Niagara" (Iroquois Nation pronunciation "Nee-ah-GAh-rah" is said to originate from an Iroquois word "Onguiaahra" meaning "The Strait."
Niagara Falls is composed of two major sections separated by Goat Island: Horseshoe Falls, on the Canadian side of the border and American Falls on the United States side. The smaller Bridal Veil Falls also is located on the American side, separated from the main falls by Luna Island.
Viewpoints on the American shore generally are astride or behind the falls. The falls face directly toward the Canadian shore. Thus, the most complete views of Niagara Falls are available from the Canadian shoreline.
The Horseshoe Falls drop about 173 feet (53 m). The American Falls drop about 70 feet (21 m) before reaching a jumble of fallen rocks that were deposited by a massive rock slide in 1954. The larger Horseshoe Falls are about 2,600 feet (792 m) wide, while the American Falls are 1,060 feet (323 m) wide. The volume of water approaching the falls during peak flow season is 202,000 cubic feet per second (5,720 m³/s.
During the low tourist season in the winter, the volume remains a flat 50,000 cubic feet per second (1,416 m³/s).

beautiful pictures, i haven't seen the falls in over 28 years, you know once they stopped the falls to take care of the rocks below and another time it froze over, now would you believe that once i was helping a potato farmer carry some barrels of potatoes near the falls, well i had dumped the potatoes where i was supposed to and then i kinda slipped and fell backwards into the water, the barrel flipped over my head and landed on this obnoxious tour guide, he fell into the water but was able to get up because it was a puddle near a frankfurter stand, so we ate some hotdogs.

I was there for a conference. I was lucky enough to have a falls view (about 700 of us were competing for it) with a balcony (third picture was taken from there!). Unfortunately, it was always cloudy. The sun came up on Friday (last three pictures), but I have already checked out of my room. Darn!

I love the falls. It seems so weird seeing photographs of them without any Maid of the Mist boats out on the water!
