at the right side of this pic is where the bodies of the victims of the triangle shirtwaist factory were piled up on each other. 
at this spot the police and onlookers watched in horror as the young women jumped to their deaths across the street. 
i can't believe i'm standing in this place of disaster and now 95 years later there is joviality, food, drink and people laughing and moving about and it seems that i'm the only one thinking about the fire, or am i.
children, 5 generations later are playing in the cool evening of the last weeks of fall.
and this drummer setting up to play his cool jazz on a cool evening. wish i could have stayed to listen but i had to catch up to my wife and children.

it really blows my mind to imagine the infinite number of moments and events which have ever occured in a place like new york city.

serlingrod - i feel the same way.
don't know if it would be fair to say there is total apathy regarding triangle shirtwaist. every year on march 25 they close off the block and have a memorial ceremony, and read the names of the victims. the FDNY sends a few engines which raise their ladders to the sixth floor, which was the maximum height reached by fire laddres in 1911. lots of unions send folks to speak since this was such a seminal moment in the labor movement. actually, considering the length of time that has passed, it's kind of remarkable how much they do to commemorate the event. not trying to shout anybody down, just thought you all might like to know.

thank you little ukraine, i never knew about that ceremony, i thought new yorkers forgot about that fire, seems when i read the book about it many years ago i became emotionaly tied to the event. i guess there may be other famous or infamous places in manhattan like serlingrod says and i think i'll try to find out about them and let you all know but my favorite place is where the macy's thanksgiving day parade was filmed in nyc in 1947 and the real santa finds a drunken santa and hits him and then he takes over, my favorite, because i used to go to macy's on the 7th floor with my parents and its true, every time i told santa what i wanted for christmas i always got it except for the bb gun and it wasn't even a red ryder.

the fact that you took the time to photograph people having a good time and all-around lively place of washington square park and then had the nerve to write captions about how nobody stops to even think about the fire anymore.
i am an NYU student and every time i pass the brown building, i stop to look up. but you are severely mistaken if you think that each historical fact can be remembered and reminisced, especially in new york city. i believe you, sir, are forgetting that allen ginsberg, charlie parker, and andy warhol all at one time lived on washington square park and have contributed it to burgeoning into the place that it is today.
it is creepy and unrealistic to write captions about the horrible deaths those women experienced. you're failing to understand that life moves on and that it's possible to still remember these important milestones without hindering a good time while doing so.

sorry kevin, you should read my words a little closer, i said, "or am i", i,m talking about years past, i have made no such statement about people having to remember, "each historical fact", and lets be honest, the park was always a playpen for perverts, junkies and dope addicts, and allen, charlie and andy contributed very little so just do your homework and do it correctly, get your diploma and when you have grown up and watched the area change then you may speak out.
