Poverty in the Philippines

In 2003, almost 23.8 million people lived below the Philippines' poverty threshold. This represents 24 per cent of Philippine families and 30 per cent of the population. According to international data, 44 per cent of the population subsisted on US$2 or less a day. In addition, the Philippines has one of the highest levels of income inequality in Asia, with the poorest 20 per cent of the population accounting for only 5 per cent of total income or consumption.www.ausaid.gov.au/country/country.cfm?CountryID=31

But in Makati City, there is hardly a sign of it. Makati is like Manhattan to NY, or Toronto to the Greater Toronto Area. Corporate offices of banks and multinational companies, 5 star hotels and luxury condominiums abound here.

This is is Ayala Avenue, the Wall Street or Bay Street of Makati.

This is Greenbelt, Makati. They have preserved the greeneries which is very imoressive.

And this is my view while drinking P120.00 coffee ($2.75) at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf at Greenbelt, waiting for girlfriends delayed by the horrendous traffic..

And this is Glorietta. This is the mall that blew up on October 19, 2007. I was shopping there on October 8. Though it was 11 days apart, it still gave me the creeps.

This is a condominium complex at The Fort. The Fort is used to be known as Fort Bonifacio, the headquarters for the Philippine Army. They have sold most of it to the Ayala Developers. The asking price for the penthouse is apparently P36,000,000.00 (roughly $800,000.00).
