Some shots from last weekend’s Gowanus Canal Tour with BCUE, led by the very able Daniel Wiley. I suppose that this also serves very well as an addendum to the Bridges of New York City

A bridge too far. The Carroll Street Bridge, circa 1880, is the the oldest on the canal. It also was the one that was malfunctioning that day. So I can't show you the flushing tunnel at the upper end of the canal, at Butler St. Notice the adventurous Gowanus Dredgers that are similarly turned back. you can take a ride yourself if you like. Just look 'em up at www.gowanuscanal.org/.

It Isn't Easy Being Green

The city can be tough on trees. This one casts a great shadow but the tree itself doesn't look so hot. It's amazing how trees can grow around their own injuries, like sold liquid. This one saddens me.
