This eclectic block will soon be demolished to make way for a mid-rise office building with a Best Buy on the bottom. The famous Theatre is the worst casualty from the last affair, hosting its last show ever a couple weeks ago. God, this city pisses me off sometimes!

One of the best performances I ever saw in Montreal was Jeff Healey at the Spectrum in the spring of 1991. Such a shame to lose this block. No more Spectrum, no more Pizza Lilass. Big business kills another piece of Montreal's unique soul.

CE: 17th Aug 2007 - 04:12 GMT

That's too bad that you weren't able to go to Concordia. it's a good school and Montreal is a wonderful city.

Yeah, this really is too bad. the new building is supposed to be pretty soulless too and what the Best Buy that is planned will do for the street doesn't need mention I don't think.

CE: 17th Aug 2007 - 04:15 GMT

Oh, I forgot that you did those two posts on the pizza joint and Spectrum (although I did remember that you had written something about it).

That block is pretty cool indeed. I am actually surprise it hasnt been removed before, it is after all in a prime location. I think it wouldnt be so bad if it wasnt a Bestbuy. Bestbuy is so generic plus a FutureShop 3 blocks down, I dont get it.

i'll never understand how things like this happen. sorry to hear about this.

serlingrod: 17th Aug 2007 - 14:30 GMT

this block looks familiar...is this across the street from Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal?

CE: 17th Aug 2007 - 15:22 GMT

Pretty much, it's one block down. This picture was taken from the courtyard in front of it.

Laterallateral: 18th Aug 2007 - 18:40 GMT

Ugh... I didn't realise, uppon hearing about this, a few weeks back that it meant no more Galaxie Bleue. That was an excellent place to buy cheap chucks.

Ha! I knew these buildings looked familiar! Here's the shot I snagged earlier this summer. F*** Best Buy!

Something very similar happened in Philly earlier last year.....a row of very unique storefronts right by Rittenhouse Square were demolished to make way for a large condo tower. The shame is the developer got caught up in red tape, so 1 year and 6 months later we still have a huge hole in the ground. it's a damn shame.
