Shooting Stars & City Glow
[previous] :: [next]last night and early this morning was the climax of this year's perseid meteor shower, caused by the earth's passage through debris from the swift-tuttle comet. we decided on short notice to head out of town to see it, so we picked up an autoshare car and drove up highway 400, almost to barrie. we pulled over on the 8th concession road at a patch of gravel with no houses nearby.
the air outside the car was chilly, and it was very dark when the car lights went out. we laid down like dominoes on the pavement and looked up at the stars.
the glow from toronto filled the southern sky, but we could still see plenty of meteors. unfortunately my camera didn't capture any.
a family of raccoons chirped in a tree nearby and at one point climbed down to investigate.
it was surreal to lay there on the road in the dark. at 3:15 we left and drove back toward the bright lights. We did get a good view of the lightening in the distance and we too were greeted by an incredibly tame family of raccoons.
