Governor's Island

Its hard to believe this is the first post on citynoise about governor's island.

image 21259

It is one of my favorite spaces in the city, so close to all but with such a distant feel.

image 21260

It was only opened to the public in 2003, after 300 and some of years of military use.

image 21263

Those three centuries have left their mark on the landscape. While the rest of the city was shaped with the interest of accomodating teeming masses...

image 21262

...Governor's Island was all about triangulation, clear lines of fire, and billetting troops to protect the city in time of war--as well as keeping them in locked up!

image 21261

The cannons of Governor's Island, installed in Castle Williams and Fort Jay, never had to fire a shot in anger. But they were ready!

image 21264

Times are different now, and the landscape will soon be different, too.

The southern half (made of landfill from subway construction), will soon be transformed into one of NYC's newest parks.

What will it be? No one yet knows! I am following the selection process closely. You can too!

I'll be following developments here and posting more photos over the summer...
