Canada Malt Plant
[previous] :: [next]The Canada Malt Plant is one of the most famous abandoned factories in Montreal. Most of what is left is a series of silos and a few scattered buildings and loading bays, all of which are completly covered in some of the city's best graffiti. These pictures were taken last winter and unfortunately we only got on the grounds around and between the silos. A future visit will hopefully take us inside the silos and be buildings attached. This is the outside of the plant from the Lachine Canal side. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures of the other side which is the best known part due to the giant roller tags, some of which are well over ten metres high. This side however has what is probably the largest SAKE in the city.
A clever play on words, an Anarchist apparently didn't get the joke. Can anyone guess the reference? The rest of the pictures are taken amongst the silos.
This hole was completely full of discarded paint cans and nothing much else other than some sort of sludge.
To put the sheer size of the graffiti in perspective, my very long hair and I have taken the liberty of standing in front of it. I'm about a little over a metre and a half tall so you can imagine how high up the wall this graf goes.

Peter: 31st May 2007 - 17:19 GMTi lvoe it... great post! i cant quite read the anarchist thing, though... what does it say? ohhhhh malt plant how i miss thee: 19th Jun 2007 - 03:49 GMTthanks for blurring my face! anon (adsl-065-005-230-016.sip.lft.bellsouth.net): 26th Jun 2007 - 04:07 GMTdamn, i wish more people did graffiti where i live at. there should be a place like that down here. amazing art, everyone thinks graffiti is the lowest form of art, i say its bullshit. CE: 27th Jul 2007 - 15:50 GMTThe anarchist thing had a picture of a yellow star with the Calgary Flames logo over top of it with a hammer and sickle placed inside the logo. Underneath is said Marxist-Lannyist. It's a play on words, Lanny McDonald was the captain of the Calgary Flames at one time. Somebody apparently didn't see the humour and objected to the hammer and sickle (or maybe jsut the flames) and replaced it with their choice of ideological symbols. Last time I was at the Malt Plant, pretty much the whole thing was covered up by a large tag.
EL: 2nd Oct 2007 - 07:17 GMTwow, I took almost the same picture a year ago By the way, the brown silo are in fact very special and ones of the last in the world. Nizo Vandolow: 11th Oct 2007 - 17:12 GMTThis Is A super alsome place!! Shout outs and probs to every one in and out it!!!!
