Paris Arches

Here are some more photos from my recent Paris trip. When looking through my shots, I realised that Parisians sure love their arches!

The good ol' Arch de Triumph:

La Grande Arche de la Defense - This amazing building is directly in line with (although a long way away from) the Arch de Triumph:

The massive station complex in front of La Grande Arche de la Defense:

In the shadow of the the huge arched struts that form the base of the Eiffel tower:

Many of the Paris Metro stations have these fantastic art-deco arched entrances. Can't remember what this stop was called ('Blanche' I think from looking at the pic), but it is just down the street from the Moulin Rouge:

The famous Pont Neuf near to Notre Dame. Apparently this was the first major bridge built in Europe without buildings along it.

Not to be picky but the Metro entrance is actually in the art nouveau style, designed by Hector Guimard. Paris has dozens of them, many of them much more elaborate than this one. Montreal actually has one that was donated by the city of Paris.

Great post, you've really made the banal tourist sites that we've seen a million times really come alive. These are some of my favourite types of posts.

Thanks for compliments and for the lesson in art/design! I'm on my way to Wikipedia now and will hopefully soon be all knowledged up on Art Nouveau! :-)

I also love the posts avoiding the tourist clichés... when in Paris (unfortunately at the end of my trip) I realised that I have a love for the style of their doors of all things I'm now desperate to go back and snap em all - the tall thin double one's like this:
