Bushwick: Wild Dogs Gone Soft

Bushwick's just ain't what it used to be.

I hear from many old timers that packs of wild dogs would wander the empty streets and take up homes in the hollow houses.

I thought they were no more.

But I found these furry throwbacks wandering friskily around Cedar and Evergreen a few months ago. They did not even seem that wild to me. With no empty streets to wander, burned out houses to make your own, wonder how they make it? Maybe by being so amiable?

anyone else seen these dogs recently?

aw, i'm pretty sure i saw that dog on the left when i first visited what is now my house on Eldert Street. my first introduction to the block was stepping by this sorry ol' fella. he was totall docile and didn't seem underfed. perhaps the enormous supply of stray cats in the neighborhood provides sustenance?

I see two of the three nearly every morning on the corner of Myrtle and Central.

My wife and I attended Pratt Institute from '68-72. We saw the pack of wild dogs in that area several times, usually in winter. The assumption was that they were very hungry, and on the hunt. Back then we estimated the pack to be 20 dogs or more, and were tightly packed. They moved quickly, and made a racket barking while running. The barking gave fair warning, and gave a chance for people to run up the stairs of the brownstones to wait for the dogs to pass. Pure terror, especially for parents and kids. I wish I had taken a picture.
