Fire on Ste Catherine

While walking to school last February I noticed there were a lot of emergency vehicles, fire trucks in particular, hurrying down the main arteries of downtown. I was already late for school so I was unable to find out where they were going until after class. While eating lunch, I was told there had been a huge fire on rue . When I arrived, the fire had been pretty much extinguished and the remaining firefighters were just pouring water on the building to make sure the flames had been completly extinguished. It was an extremely cold day so the ice from the water used to douse the flames was quite spectacular. As a result of the fire, three stores were destroyed completly and a couple others suffered minor damages. Dozens of people in the apartments above were left homeless.

Quite the good series. I did not even know about the fire until a friend of mine from Kahnawake called me to tell me about it on the news. The ice is quite spectacular looking, too bad it comes from such a sad source. That's a pretty good shot of the back, as well.

A few days later, the owner of the bar next door took me up to the back roof, from where I could look down and see the devastation from above. All that was left was the brick skeleton of the interior walls, kind of like WW2 newsreel footage of bombed-out buildings. It was quite amazing that nobody was hurt. I still feel bad for Omid, though. I have not seen him since then, and I can only hope that he is getting back on his feet.

The goo for this article is actually relevant. Nice.

The owners of the bar had considered launching a lawsuit against the Montreal Mirror for the slanderous lies in this article. www.montrealmirror.com/2007/022207/news2.html

The allegations about the rooms upstairs really caught all of us who frequent the Diana Bar quite by surprise. The tenants of the building were a mix of senior citizens, Concordia students, a legal worker, and one of the DJ's for Club Super Sexe. The clientele could often get rowdy, and like any bar in the Montreal area, a number of the customers use drugs, but crack houses and prostitution? Insane.

I knew some people who hung out there who obviously crackheads, but there are also a number of others who hang out there, including two reporters and some off-duty cops, and even some lawyers and medical professionals. And as far as the prostitution goes, I know a lot of the girls there, and most of them are either respectable, or else they give it away, not sell it. Jeez, what poor journalistic integrity.
