Many people in the traditionally working class neighbourhood of are unhappy with the closure of the small IGA grocery store in favour of the new supermarket style IGA designed to cater to the new, richer, condo buying residents.

iman: POWER TO THE POOR! HELL YEAH!

Is this the one at the corner of Place St-Henri and Notre-Dame?

CE: Yup.

Frank S. Besner: 11th Apr 2007 - 02:11 GMT

I was just at the IGA on Charlevoix, tonight and boy can I vouch for your statement, CE. Prices at these chains are through the roof! I especially love how they compulsively try to con the economy conscious shopper with sales that arent really sales at all. I'm sure you've all done this at some point: lift the little "On Sale" card... At least 1 time out of ten, you're mortified, finding out that either A) there's no discount or B) you're getting screwed, the list price is a whole 10 cents cheaper. This place still beats any grocery store I used to shop at in the Plateau, though...

CE: 12th Apr 2007 - 17:16 GMT

If you go to the one on Notre-Dame in Saint-Henri, there are murals painted on the walls above the shelves. One is a typical picture of the store but the other is of the canal with the new condos in the background. You can't possibly say that the store isn't built for the rich people moving into the condos. Even the decor (which is very upscale) of the store suggests it.

So, that's why. I have just been to that store in St Henri yesterday, and thought that it looked a bit empty for that time of the day (10 customers on a Sunday late afternoon?). Not to mention, I noticed they had piles and piles of fresh groceries rotting away there. It might be a bit early to say, but if they don't start catering their prices to suit the people in that area, I suspect they might go out of business soon.

Rayny: 8th Aug 2007 - 18:11 GMT

Yes, and they are a bunch of assholes at the new store too! I want to punch to manager in the face.

Yes the new IGA is more expensive. There is more variety though. I moved to NDG in '04, and have to say Esposito is more expensive and very limited, not to mention the rent is double! I've regreted the move ever since. If you live in St Henri just be thankful for small mercies.

nancy: 11th Mar 2008 - 00:13 GMT

that old space is still empty...we need a cheap little fruiterie there...the prices at that IGA really are astronomical!! Its also really disorganized...and their organic section sucks..notice too, that anything that is on sale all sugary crap with no nutritional value what so ever...gets you high but leaves you hungry

Ken Maki: 13th Apr 2008 - 14:32 GMT

I agree the owner of the IGA on Charlevoix Pat Tofetta is an ignorant money grabbing PRICK! I say Fuck You IGA!.
Shop at the Maxi on Wellington they treat you like a human being.
I hope the IGA goes out of business.
