garibaldi, what he is doing in washington square park i'll never know. but behind his statue, under the building canopy, at left, is the very same building that the triangle shirtwaist factory fire occured in. the women, mostly irish and italian immigrants, locked up in a factory room near their sewing machines, jumped out of the ninth floor window to the corner pavement below. NYU occupies the buildings now.

i used to know the story behind the garibaldi statue but i don't recall it now.
every year on march 25 a ceremony is held commemorating the Triangle Shirtwaist fire. A fire engine ladder is extended to the sixth floor window to mark the tragic inadequacy of the company ladders at that time, which did not extended past that point.

also, glad to see you are enjoying the park before it undergoes massive, heavily debated renovations.

thanks, i was there yesterday with my daughter and 4 month old grandaughter. my daughter received her masters at NYU and since we had some time we strolled the park. i will post the hanging tree.
