back in 1959 i was fishing on that pier with my friend bernie and someone pulled up a spider crab onto the pier. we all walked over to look at this hideous creature that had hairy, spidery legs and was really big. i pulled out my 10 inch knife and threw it at the crab but missed. so as i went to pull it out of the wooden dock i spotted the crab coming for me and yanked the knife out but cut into my right thumb deeply. so bernie and i went down to the beach and found a first aid hut there and the medic began to patch me up. the blood was gushing out and he used some sort of tincture anti-biotic wash to clean my thumb. i grimmaced but it was bernie who wanted to become a doctor got woozy and had to lie down before he fainted from all the blood. the medic and i just looked at him and i said, hey pal, i should be lying down and bernie said, but pal, i'm resting for you and so a few years later when i was left with a scarred thumb bernie got to see much more blood on the battlefields of nam. i saw bernie last week and we still laugh about that fishing day and the day we got thrown off the bus with the rotten fish.
