Where Is Steeplechase?

where is the steeplechase? a baseball stadium? i see the parachute jump but the old steeplechase is gone.. it was right there where the ball park is now. as a young kid i would hop on the back of the mc donald avenue trolley and ride for free to coney. go see the gypsy girls and run in to steeplechase. for a buck you could get a round card with ten little squares and each time you went on a ride they would punch a hole in one square. the thrill of walking into the big dome and jumping on the revolving dish and getting pulled off by the force of the spin. the rolling tube and trying to walk across without falling and once you fell that was it, you couldn't get back up and you crawled and laughed all the way to the other side. then the ghost house where it was pitch black inside and you tried to find your way to the exit. a few years later i went in with a girl named betty and while we were all bumping into other people in there i grabbed her arm and took a shot at a kiss. well she reciprocated and we kissed in the dark and i had my arms around her subtle body, her smooth curves and we whispered to each other for at least twenty minutes. kisses all kisses and holding tightly to each other. her hair smelled of lilacs and we held hands very close, our bodies up against each other the way we never did before and as soon as it had begun it ended. i walked her to the end. when we got to the lighted end of the house we immediately dropped each other's hands because she saw her boyfriend and i saw betty waiting out side for us. they didn't know each other so they were just standing there waiting on us and then we walked out. i didn't glance at her and she didn't look at me but she went to him laughing saying, "where were you silly" and as she walked away she turned and we looked at each other and we knew we had become very intimate for a short time in the darkness. this is a true story. i took betty by the hand, and we went to the horses that run on tracks around steeplechase, the day was over but i couldn't kiss betty that evening. i didn't feel guilty about anything although maybe i should have, i don't know, i thought maybe that other girl in the dark was meant for me. it was just that majic that took place. truthfully, when i think of it, i think i knew right away that it wasn't betty in my arms and she knew it wasn't her boyfriend. like the song goes, 'it was just one of those things', 'just one of those crazy flings'
