excellent set of shots. i love the ones with the stairs - i love stairs.

Sirhcbre: If you love stairs, you would love Montreal!

ksedge: i already do!

Peter: 2nd Oct 2006 - 13:47 GMT

those spiral staircases! so cool. they always get me.

and yeah, i hate that 60s-style permastone architecture too. my grandma lives in a house like that, heh.

Sirhcbre: 3rd Oct 2006 - 00:10 GMT

It's a shame that it's now apparently illegal to build walkup apartment buildings but fire/safety code prohibits it. I have seen a few new buildings with staircases though, particularly in the areas being gentrified. I'm not sure what loophole they're using but it's happening.

Matt: 15th Oct 2006 - 21:48 GMT

you know its quite odd to see verdun this many years later, the only things that have changed are the newer models of cars on the street. you could put older cars in those pics and it look just as it did years ago. does this make any sense? keep it up..awesome site!

carol: 4th Jan 2007 - 21:50 GMT

great picture.verdun is one of a kind i love verdun

ZailDark: 2nd Feb 2007 - 19:29 GMT

Very cool, my grandfather lives just around there so I've been to all of those places. It's cool seeing it all again, the last time I was tehre was a few years ago so I didn't have a good camera at the time. Nice to see, brings back memorys.

EL: 18th Oct 2007 - 22:44 GMT

You should see Verdun in December, every porch and staircase glimmering with lights. Gorgeous. Good shopping on Wellinton Street too.

Marlene: 20th Oct 2007 - 19:38 GMT

Montreal is the best the city in Canada....and it wouldn't be any good without Verdun.

Kenneth Maki: 11th Feb 2008 - 16:01 GMT

image 16177 the pastachio green place was where I lived at 272 rue Rielle
Verdun is an awesome part of Montreal, beats the hell of Pointe St, Charles.

Long timeVerdunois: 12th Feb 2008 - 00:49 GMT

Good to see pics of Verdun, Montreal is not all Ste.Catherine St. you know.

T: 5th Apr 2008 - 23:05 GMT

Love the shots, brings back wonderful memories. I used to go to the elementary school across from the Verdun Metro.

Montrealbunny: 19th Apr 2008 - 22:13 GMT

Ha! Ha! When I moved to Montreal I specifically looked for a home without those stairs. They appear precarious at the best of times, but have you tried climbing them in 4" heels? And the thought of snow on them in winter...aaggh!! I guess you have to be born here to successfully navigate them. That being said, your pictures are beautiful and I will be sure to make a trip to the Verdun metro this summer.

colavitos ghost: 20th Apr 2008 - 13:23 GMT

if those "suburbs" are only a block away from a "very urban part" of town, they can't realistically be called "suburbs" then, can they?

for me, a "suburb" is much more than just a style of residential housing.

Genevieve: 6th Jun 2008 - 13:45 GMT

Indeed, that building housing the Uniprix was once home to the Savoy theatre. Good eye.

Juanita: 24th Jun 2008 - 04:59 GMT

What great pictures. Takes me back to my youth = 1926 to 1949 when I moved to california. Went back for a visit in 1975 but not since. I went to Wellington Elementary and Verdun High. Probably knew William Shatner in high school but do not remember. For those who remember - Buzz Beurling of WW2 fame lived next door to my family on Rielle Avenue. Still in touch with his cousin. Lots of memories.

carol : 2nd Aug 2008 - 02:25 GMT

love those shots grew up in that area.still looks the same.thanks

Susan Schofield nee Hibbert: 21st Nov 2008 - 12:11 GMT

My Dad Charlie and his twin brothers Roy and Donny Hibbert were brought up on Melrose Avenue, Verdun their Dad was a police Seargant in Verdun from 1924 to 1936 am trying to find out the name of the school ice hockey team they had what looks like an indian head on their jumpers. Hoping to visit Verdun Sept. 2009 to go on a trip down memory lane.

Sandra MacDonald: 5th Dec 2008 - 12:57 GMT

I left Verdun in 68 and have only gone back three times. I have the greatest memories of growing up there. I was back in June 07 and spent lots of time walking around Verdun and was so happy that it looked the almost the same.
For those of you who love to remember Verdun, there are a couple of websites one called Verdun Connections and the other called Verdun our hometown.

Claude: 18th Jan 2009 - 04:00 GMT

Used to live in Verdun, also in my childhood, my father did a bit of business in a financial building not far from a Steinberg's store (corner Verdun and Brault), I remember most of the commercial stores, Wellington Street mostly, my uncle worked at Steinberg's Verdun near Desmarchais (a Jean Coutu pharmacy), and I lived there between 2002 and 2004. Very charming part of town, I miss it a bit, however, it's fun to come back there once in a while to recap good memories...

Great pictures, keep up the good work !

CL

Bonnie: 23rd Feb 2009 - 01:58 GMT

I lived in Verdun when I was a child. My family and I left when I was 12 years old and I am now 45 years old. Until this day I still miss it. When ever I get a chance to get back I do. I love walking down Wellington street, as we use to do that as a child.we love the bakery just before Allard street.

Gilles Belec: 30th Mar 2009 - 23:08 GMT

I lived in on rue de L'eglise, corner of Lesage Street from 1950-1955. These pictures brought back memories of me fishing in the Aquaduct, off the bridge. I attended Banantyne Elementary school to grade three, then we moved to Hadley Street in Ville Emard where I attended Connaught School. I played hockey a good bit and played high school football at Verdun High. I have lived here in Cplumbia, South Caroliona for the past 24 years. Thanks again for great memories.

Le Bien, Le Mal: 18th May 2009 - 17:37 GMT

Some of the days, I do wish that I spent only 45 minutes in Verdun ;-]

Gilles Belec: 5th Jul 2009 - 00:21 GMT

If anyone thinks they might know me from when I lived in Verdun, on Rue De L'eglise, corner LeSage, from 1950-1955, please feel free to try to contact me by e-mail at: gilldianne@bellsouth.net. I attended Bannantyne Elem. and Verdun High. From there we moved to Hadley Street in Ville Emard, across Campell Park. Thanks. By the way, I have really enjoyed reading about Verdun on this sight. Brings back floods of wonderful memories. God bless.

Jon Vought: Awesome! Totally awesome!

Ron Wagnell: 3rd Aug 2009 - 19:30 GMT

Verdun, what a place. Loved growing up there and really wish I could meet up with all my freinds, for just one more time. English & French, we played hockey together, we played together, we fought together and against each other, but wouldn't chance it for the world. Some real good shots, thanks for the memories.

Pomegranate: 4th Oct 2009 - 00:23 GMT

Verdun, very pretty, but very boring! No music scene, nightlife, shopping or taverns either! But eh.. if you want to start a family well away from the core of Montreal..

Michael: 27th Dec 2009 - 02:46 GMT

Verdun Rocks.. best place I've ever lived. Just enough night life, just enough of everything. Not boring one bit and about 10 minutes from the center of Montreal. Don't go West my son!

Allan Tristram ( Tweet ): 30th Dec 2009 - 23:29 GMT

Left Verdun to head out west in 1949. Lived on 5th Ave and went to Verdun High and Woodland Elementary. Lots of kids on the streets and few cars in those days during the war. Scotty Bowman grew up on 5th Ave. Lots of pedestrian traffic on our street then. Big Catholic Church on the corner and Catholic schools at both ends on the street. Great place to be a kid in those times. Out door rinks, The Natatorium, the river and the aqueduct and the fields to play and explore in.

Sandra MacDonald: 7th Jan 2010 - 09:33 GMT

I hitched to the west in 69 and stayed but I always call Verdun my home.
It was the best place to grow up. We the baby boomers were never without friends. The streets and lanes were full of children playing.
I have such great memories of Verdun.

Ron Chapman: 18th Jan 2010 - 16:33 GMT

That photo of Wolfe cycle brings back Memories. I bought my first 2 wheel bike there . A CCM for $16.00. Nothing had changed I rang the bell and explained to the lady that I had lived there1935 to 1949 and that our rent was $27.00 a Mounth. She said it was a lot more now I drove down Wellington passed ST CLEMENTS CHURCH IT had SHRUNKand then I found that someone had stolen the wellington tunnel

R Chartier: 25th Jan 2010 - 09:05 GMT

Went for a trip on google street view yesterday, refreshed my 40+ yr memories of Jacque Cartier, Victoria & Champlain bridges, Pi 9, Chalaroi, Montreal North, LaSalle, and looked so forward to a trip thru Wellington Tunnel - I'm so sad to learn it was closed in 94 - how could anyone even think of closing down such a memory of Montreal?

Reb Frost: 14th Feb 2010 - 16:16 GMT

Nice shots.. I'm an artist living in Verdun... I paint and photograph a lot of the old places around here..also do some urban exploring whenever possible.... Always nice to see people interested in the city and hear some of the comments by people who grew up around these places..

Sharon Starr: 23rd Feb 2010 - 16:29 GMT

Oh, how I hated those duplexes with all the stairs, never lived in one of those, we lived across the aquaduct in cote St. Paul, I moved out to alberta in 76 but go back to visit every few years. Guess what, bought a print of a duplex with the stairs and is now haning in my living room!

Renee: 26th Jul 2010 - 04:20 GMT

Great pics. Brings back alot of memories. I like the old apartment buildings more, too. Too bad alot of them burn down due to fire.

Joan: 8th Sep 2011 - 12:27 GMT

I lived on 6th Ave. went to St. Willibrord school, nothing like shopping on Saturday afternoon with my Mum on Wellington Street, that was in the late 50's. I still like to visit the street that I lived on (6th ave) brings back many memories, Wellington Street has changed.

If anyone lived on Third Avenue in the 40's, do leave a note here. I was born in 1940 and thanks to my father being transferred to Victoria, BC in 1949, I was forced to leave Verden where fond memories still abound in the ol'noggin'. Roller skating on the streets with the kids from the Noseworthy, Warnock, Stocker, LeBrun families; hiking to and from the Natatorium for swim lessons; swimming, too, at the YMCA and at the Ville Emard pool and lessons with Mike Mallette; walks on the Boardwalk, visits with my mom to the Bandstand (near the Boardwalk if I remember correctly) and in the winter, skating on my ankles at the local outdoor rink. Sneaking into the back lanes and when caught, getting a swift whack on my backside for so doing. Long visits with Jacqueline Walker, my babysitter and so enjoying Mrs. Walker's corned beef hash. I also remember attending Bannantyne School and having a childish crush on a Doug Cunningham. Am determined to re-visit my childhood home--nothing in Victoria ever compared to it. As I recall, I was devastated by the move, leaving all my friends and all my relatives behind and treking to a much more insular place than good ol' Verdun!!!

The Iron Triangle

The Land that Infrastructure Forgot In the shadow of Shea Stadium, on the shores of Flushing Bay, this stubborn fossil of old NYC squats. To be in the Willetts Point area feels like taking a step back into the 19th century...
