Ave Du Parc Airport?
[previous] :: [next]While at the Sunday Tam-Tams last week, I was sitting on the grass talking to my roommate about how many drugs the dancers were probably on to be able to dance as long as they were when, all of a sudden, everyone got up and started running down towards ave Du parc. I picked up my camera and started down the hill with the crowd. Everyone had gathered on the street around what what looked like a small airplane in the middle of the north bound lane of the street. There were people everwhere, nobody quite knew what was going on. I was just as confused as everyone else.
The pilot (in red) called the police on his cellphone. I found out from someone who was talking to him that his engine gave out and he had to make an emergency landing. If anything, he atleast had a good audience. There were people everywhere! The police soon showed up and started taping the area off. If you look at the tip of the wing on the right you can see a bit of damage. I thought maybe it had hit a tree on its way down but I later found out it had clipped a street sign. Hundreds of people lined both sides of the street. Between the football game on one side of the street and the Tam-Tams on the other, there were well over a thousand people there.
The police begin pushing people off the street onto the sidewalk so emergency vehicles could check the plane. Two ambulances, six or seven firetrucks, and a number of police cars were all over the place. Thank God nobody was injured. Had the pilot landed just metres to the right or left he could have hurt a lot of people! Here's a news story from The Gazette about the incident: www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/story.html?id=a6f703d3-fa19-4c82-9563-95d0dafe85b1 Ave du Parc, Plateau, Montreal This article has been viewed 1799 times in the last 51 months EvilGentleman: 14th Sep 2006 - 23:46 GMTHot damn! You got that one! Good job! I was going nuts about not being able to get pictures of this, and I really wanted to see it. Now I can see your pictures here. Thanks, man!
Sirhcbre: 15th Sep 2006 - 00:49 GMTOut of curiosity, what do you like about the second shot? I myself wasn't particularly happy with it and I actually almost didn't put it in. EvilGentleman: 15th Sep 2006 - 00:57 GMTThat was actually a pretty talented piece of flying. If I remember correctly, a Cessna 172 Skyhawk has a 32-foot wingspan, and the streetlights overhang the street, so he had to be accurate down to the foot to make this landing. A busted wingtip is a small price to pay for survival. A plane without a working motor is just an aluminum glider with a lot of weight up front. In that situation, and especially being over a city, it is almost impossible to find a safe landing spot. I'm willing to bet he had considered the open space where the tam-tams are held to be the best spot he could hope for, but when he got closer, it was full of you guys, so he had to try the next best thing, which was the avenue. And he made it. As they say in the flying industry, any landing you can walk away from is a good one. Sirhcbre: 15th Sep 2006 - 01:29 GMTHe was also very lucky to land during a red light or else he would have taken a few cars out with him during landing. He's obviously a very good piolet with a lot of luck. I hope he bought a lottery ticket. jeeff: 15th Sep 2006 - 01:30 GMTsecond last. it looks like the plane is just queued up in traffic, and the cop's antics are a nice touch too. EvilGentleman: 15th Sep 2006 - 03:23 GMTAt least this one did a lot better than the one in Saint Hubert, about 20 km east of there. That plane hit two cars and flipped, and put a few people in the hospital. Of course, since it was a Piper Cherokee 140, it would have had low wings, and therefore would have been way too wide for traffic, unlike the high-wing Cessna 172.
