Sunday Tam-Tams
Browsing articles by CE - [previous] :: [next]The Tam-Tams as described by Wikipedia: Mount Royal hosts a unique activity in summer time known as the "Sunday Tam-Tams", whereby hundreds, or if the weather is nice, thousands of Montrealers and visitors play tam-tams (a type of hand drum) on the east slope of the mountain, around the monument to Sir George-Étienne Cartier. The Sunday gatherings attract people of various backgrounds, and often dozens of tam-tam players perform their art at the same time, encouraging others to dance. Attendees also engage in other activities, such as the smoking of marijuana, footbag, frisbee, sunbathing, guitar-playing, Boffer wars (occasionally interrupted by zombie attacks), juggling (and other clown-related activities) and reading. The origins of this spontaneous gathering are unknown, and it is not organised by the municipal authorities. The city does restrict commercial activity, however, as vendors are not permitted to set up tables or displays, are required to remain in designated areas and must register each week. The police and first aid technicians are present to ensure the safety of those present. The Sunday Tam-Tams continued throughout the summer of 2005 and into spring 2006, despite extensive restoration work being undertaken to the Sir George-Étienne Cartier statue.

Sirhcbre: 14th Sep 2006 - 04:34 GMTTams tams happen when it's realitivly warm (which means different things for different people) and when it isn't raining (which would explain why you didn't see them). Marc: 10th May 2007 - 07:35 GMTAnybody who comes to Montreal during the summer HAS to go see the Tam-Tams! I've had some of the best times of my life there! Merlin: 23rd Sep 2007 - 11:17 GMTA few wonderful videos of the Tam tams at this address: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=tamtammontreal Amanda: 29th Jun 2008 - 13:26 GMTIt's not raining right now but there is a chance of rain the afternoon. Is there a way to find out if the Tam tams are still going to take place? EvilGentleman: 30th Jun 2008 - 00:33 GMTThey now seem to take place every Sunday, rain or shine. But when the weather is really bad, only the most hard-core tam-tam people stay there. Last year, they kept going until Halloween, if I recall correctly. Corinna : 6th Jul 2008 - 05:56 GMTIf it's not raining, but there is a chance, or it's just drizzling, just go! There are always at least a few people there.
