Blood on the Pavement

that's my blood. last night on the way home from the rhino (1249 queen st west in parkdale) vee and i were hit by a car. vee's ok aside from a big bump on her shin. i have a matching bump on my shin, plus two broken front teeth (the top ones), a cut lower lip, 2 stitches in my right elbow, road rash on my left shoulder, and various bumps & bruises.

we were crossing the south side of queen at dufferin (on a green light, with the walk signal) as a green mini cooper [in fact an alfa romeo] approached coming westbound under the railway tracks in the left lane. before i could react the driver gunned the engine and raced around the corner right into us. the car sped up as it took the turn, and the tires shrieked. it seemed like they hit us on purpose. my face bounced off the side of the windshield as clearly as i can remember. the car sped off down dufferin without slowing.

there were lots of witnesses and three in particular were very helpful. a cab driver chased the car and tried to write down its license plate. his passenger got out and called 911, keeping an eye on me as i sat near the bus shelter. another woman looked after vee and took her to alert our friends. i was too dazed to manage more than a few head nods and a weak "thanks." i'd like to thank them properly.

soon an ambulance and police car arrived. i was strapped to a board and wheeled into the truck, but i knew already that we were both okay. i felt so thankful, positively buoyant, but i was also in shock. the ambulance took us to st. joseph's health centre (www.stjoe.on.ca

) and i got patched up quite quickly. the paramedics, nurses, and doctor were all great. two of my friends arrived soon after, and one of them somehow managed to score free donuts from a nurse. vee's parents came too, and they drove us back to my apartment when the poking and prodding was done.

the police officer told me that the plate number the cab driver provided wasn't a full match, but they'd work on it. i have his card. i never even saw the person(s) inside the car, so to me it feels like an impersonal act - getting flicked by the hand of god. still, i'd like to track down the culprit. luckily my insurance will cover the necessary dental work. once my teeth are capped i'll be left with only a few scratches and a newfound appreciation of my own fragility, of the kindness of some strangers, and the nastiness of a few unfortunate others.

My condolences on the suffering and momentary terror that you and Vee went through, and I am extremely happy to hear that you are both still more or less healthy. I wish you luck on bringing the culprit to justice, and remember, you will not only be doing this for yourselves, but you may be sparing others a far worse fate. People with such a lack of respect for life must be stopped before they cause irreparable damage.

i think if it was something else i wouldn't have been hit. few cars can take a corner as quickly as a mini, so i would have had more time to react with another type of vehicle.

i did take some close-ups of the dents & scratches on the front of the car, but the photos didn't turn out well cuz it was rainy. hard to see the damage around all the raindrops.

What a rotten story. Glad to know that you are not seriously injured.

I can't believe that they took off! That always blows me away, and then to park it next to the cop shop!

I stick to the pick paths as much as possible for this reason (not an option where you are).

A good lawyer would tell you to remove the detail from your site, as it could be used against you in court (while it all looks straight up, I'm sure a lawyer could find a way to twist it).
