Northside Fredericton
[previous] :: [next]Most of the posts about Fredericton have been centred pretty much around the south side of the city so I figured I would get some pictures of the other side of the St. John River to even things out a bit. The north side is pretty much residential with the exception of Main Street which is a pretty horrible array of strip malls and smaller box stores like Home Hardware and Shoppers Drug Marts. I guess it's the downtown of the area but it's pretty sad (I wasn't really able to get any pictures as I don't have a wide angle lense to fit the buildings and parking lots in with the street). There is also a dying mall a little ways away but apparently a Wal-Mart is planned for sometime in the future which should effectively kill off any life that does exist here. Anyways, this is only a sample of what can be seen on this side of the river. I have now moved away from Fredericton so I can't really increase this. I haven't seen Marlo for awhile but if he/she comes back, hopefully we'll see more pictures. This is the view of downtown Fredericton on the south side from where the old bridge used to end. All that is left now is the old pillers:
This is off Union Street which meets with Main Street a little ways down. It's at the head of the old bridge. I'm assuming it used to be a commercial area of sorts that died when the bridge was removed:
On Union Street. I think it was a factory of some sort at one time: Henry Chan convenience Store. Apparently it gets robbed quite often. A Strip mall: A barber shop with an identity crisis: The back of what I think was an old factory of some sorts, near the old train bridge. It is now a garage. The only good thing I remember about the north side is the awesome pool-with-twisty-waterslide at Nashwaaksis Junior High. Brad: 8th Dec 2006 - 20:54 GMTIcckk...South Side is sooo much nicer! Im so sick of those damned LHHS'goers that all have that big 'Northside Strongside' shit in their heads...SOUTHSIDE ROCKS And that brick building in the 5th pic used to be the actual police station! No wonder they moved to the new building downtown! XP iR: 15th Jan 2007 - 22:10 GMT Thanks for the visual memories. I to grew up in Fredericton and lived on the north side up on Highland Ave. I can recall as a teen getting up in the morning and running down hill and across the OLD bridge to the old high school on George St. just to keep in shape for track season. Mmmmm those were the days, and oh yah the north side "Devon" was known as having the best and the worst of gangs. The Red Bld on the corner with fire hydrant out front used to be the CIBC bank back in the 50s -70s. Kate: 11th Feb 2007 - 13:53 GMTExcuse me. I moved to the North Side of Fredericton two years ago, and I'm glad that I didn't move to the South side. Everyone is much nicer on the North side, and although there may not be a huge mall such as the one on Regent street, everything one needs to survive is here on the North Side. If one wants a nice residential area, and somewhere to meet nice people, they should come to the North side. I'm also attending Leo Hayes High School, which is a much better high school than FHS. I've met people from FHS and they are all much more self-centred and rude than the people at Leo Hayes. Some of my friends have also attended FHS, and agree that the school is a run-down school, "In need or dire repairs" as the Daily Gleaner put it. The North side used to be the smaller part of Fredericton where the Native Reserve is, but I'm glad to say that it is now growing. The South side is the area where someone who wants the city life would live, while the North side is the area where someone who wants to raise a family would live. The North side is a much more family orriented area. Thank you very much. mm: 21st Feb 2007 - 02:32 GMTI grew up on the northside (marysville). Yes Union and Main steets are not the most attractive streets, but if you were to peddle your little bike to the ville and take some pictures you would see the beauty history and uniqueness of the northside. The people on BOTH sides of the river are second to none. b: 4th May 2007 - 15:18 GMTThe fifth photo was not a police station. The police station used to be on York Street, on the south side, and it was shared with the Fire Department. Now it is just the York Street Fire Station. That building as Atlantic Rentals a few years ago, and I am sure if I thought about it I could remember what was there before that--I grew up in Nashwaaksis, had family who lived in Devon (on Union Street), and other family in good old Hammer Town (Barkers Point). Ross: 24th Nov 2007 - 21:11 GMTNorth Side is da Bomb. i moved here 2 years ago and its way better than southside. I live on the Reserve to ...way better. Ken: 15th Apr 2008 - 22:19 GMTFredericton North is great, I did some work there a couple of years ago clearing out the old CO-op store on St. Marys Rd. I 've also been to the new Wal-Mart up on Two Nations Rd. Comment on this article[previous] :: [next] |
