Blvd Decarie, Ville Saint-Laurent
Browsing articles by CE - [previous] :: [next]Welcome to my new neighbourhood. This is blvd Decarie in the old section of the borough of Ville Saint-Laurent. Decarie is actually much more than what I'm going to show here but this section of the boulevard is more or less the "downtown" of the borough. Below the area in the first picture, the Autoroute Decarie begins which is a below grade highway that cuts right through the original street. Blvd Decarie now runs on either side of the autoroute with mixed results. We begin near where the autoroute ends and the old section of Ville Saint-Laurent begins. This is an area that Jane Jacobs would have described as a "border vacuum" as it is pretty much where the neighbourhood is cut off by something that is of no appeal to pedestrians. Because of this, this area of the street receives little pedesrian traffic other than people walking to their houses or switching busses outside the metro stop. The residential block before the commercial section begins: New condos and an entrance/exit to the Du College metro stop across the street from the previous picture: The beginning of the commercial area with another entrance/exit to Du College on the right and Beaudet Park on the left: Shops across the street from the metro on rue Du College: Entrance to Beaudet Park from rue Du College: Even this far north, Montreal's signature spiral staircases can still be found: Some shots of the street as we make our way north:
Most of the side streets off Decarie are quiet with 2 or 3 story duplexes or multi-apartment buildings: The Côte-Vertu metro station where this post came from: Ending the commercial area of the street is a large fruit stand and grocery store. I haven't strolled any further but it seems to turn back into a residential street after this. Norgate Shopping Centre, on the other side of the street, gets it's own post. There is a large revitalization project slated for the boulevard. It was supposed to already be underway but I can't find any evidence of it other than upgrades to a parking lot on an adjacent street. I'm going to visit the borough office tomorrow and I'll get more information on it (there is an excellent .pdf file that outlines it all but I can't seem to find it). EvilGentleman: 24th Aug 2006 - 15:32 GMTGood shots, Sir. I can't believe how weird it feels to finally have someone else post pictures of things I saw this morning. Now we know how the Toronto and New York people feel. Sirhcbre: 24th Aug 2006 - 16:47 GMTI felt the same way when Marlo started posting from Fredericton. I like wandering around and recognizing something only to remember that I had seen it from one of your posts. It's a weird feeling to be somewhere I've never been in my life and recognize it. It also helps beat a bit of the culture shock I'm currently experiencing. EvilGentleman: 24th Aug 2006 - 19:09 GMTI think the ultimate thing is when you get posts like this. By the way, did you get my email, Sir? Chris Erb: 2nd Sep 2006 - 03:16 GMTDo you park your car against the median strip and then run like hell through the traffic to get to the legitimate sidewalk and relative safety? Sirhcbre: 2nd Sep 2006 - 06:15 GMTI wasn't even near a computer when that was posted. I'm very confused right now. Sirhcbre: 27th Sep 2006 - 01:23 GMTfinally found the Revitalization plan. It's being delayed because they're starting phase 2 (the parking lot) first and there are a lot of concerns (many of which I don't agree with) from the store owners. saintlaurent.ville.montreal.qc.ca/En/Intro/dest_decarie_en.pdf I've been wanting to go to planning meetings but they happen the same days I have class all day until 10:45pm.
