A Walk Through the International District

A recent walk through Seattle's , similar to in other cities.

It's an O. Henry story, a song by The Cramps, and it's part of the title of a classic porn flick; it's the mysterious .

I had the Visual Dictionary in mind when I shot this. This is a different crop than the one I sent them. I think some of you citynoise regulars would like the site : thevisualdictionary.net

The rest of the shots will now unroll without further comment...

I like the royal purple Chinese wall. At least in America, you can use royal colours without being put to death. The chair in front of the lamp post is good as well. As far as the 99¢ store goes, I find that the word "up" in the sign is a nice contrast to the stairs going down.

aer suzuki: 19th Aug 2006 - 03:38 GMT

Put to death? Are you serious? Are you talking about some modern rule or an ancient one?

A regular Taiwanese visitor to my photoblog had this to say about the purple wall: "i think it's a bad taste of chinese style commercial facade" I don't know if that has anything to do with what you're saying or if they just thought my photo was tacky. I can't argue much, it -is- a Chinese-style commercial facade...I like it in any case, glad you do too.

Yeah I like the "up" too, it's that and the arrow that dragged me back to get the shot, I almost ran past that scene after exploring a strange little alley. I like that particular shade of blue and the gate design too. Thanks for commenting.

EvilGentleman: 19th Aug 2006 - 22:23 GMT

Oh, without a doubt, the purple wall is tacky, that is what adds so much to its charm, in much the same way that Las Vegas is tacky and awesome at the same time.

Thinking deeper about the royal proclamations regarding the usage of royal purple, I think that I may have attributed that to the wrong culture. I just looked up purple on wiki (), and it says that purple was the colour of royalty from ancient Rome, through medieval Europe, Byzanthium, and even was the colour associated with China's Forbidden City. But although I could not find any specific references to it, I am currently thinking that the death sentence for wearing purple probably originated with Rome, and was probably quite likely in France and England, as well. But obviously anything in China regarding royalty has to predate 1912, since the Chinese have had no royalty able to impose laws since that time.

EvilG : My question was more incredulous than literal...thanks for replying though.

drea: Thanx for the site. I luv it!

EvilGentleman: 20th Aug 2006 - 19:22 GMT

Well, you did ask whether it was modern or ancient... I just answered a lot more than what you asked. Sorry for my trademark overkill, it's a hard habit to break.

aer suzuki: 21st Aug 2006 - 08:34 GMT

No need to apologize. I'm just sayin'...and yeah, I did ask. I do appreciate the fact that you comment at all, don't get me wrong.

EvilGentleman: 21st Aug 2006 - 09:28 GMT

LOL, I know you are a good soul, no worries. I am aware of my tendency to over-communicate, so I mentioned it. I never was worried that you might be unhappy, I knew all was well. But thanks for the concern. You seem to worry about what others think almost as much as I do ;-) It's the price we pay for being decent caring people, but it's nice to know others think the way I do.
