Drugs, Drugs, Drugs

- ksedge - Sunday, August 6th, 2006 : goo

lately i've been seeing this posted in various spots.

it reads as follows:

! Drugs, Drugs, Drugs !

Dear Calgarian,

The flood of drugs in our streets is ever increasing; less and less is being done about it; the media has been silenced; and, the toll on young lives is staggering. Seeing it up close everyday is heartbreaking.

If you have children, or simply care about children in our city, you really should take a drive through my neighborhood: EAST VILLAGE, behind City Hall. (Try 3-6 PM). This is where, and how, your kids will end up - unless we all smarten up, fast.

And they served their idols:
which were a snare onto them.
Yea, they sacrificed their sons
and their daughters onto devils.
- Psalm 106 : 36 & 37

Downtown Calgary is littered with drugs and generally unsavoury characters, not just the East Village. In fact, over the past two years I've noticed that it's cleaned up a lot (40 hours a week, nights in the village). But I fear the efforts of the local police has merely pushed the activities into surrounding areas.

Calgary's a big city, this stuff happens in big cities.

jeeff: oy, poor choice of font...

C - you're right, this stuff does happen in big cities, but i've never noticed it as much in other cities as i do in calgary. i don't know why that is, but it just seems like the homeless are far more visible here.

jeeff - poor choice of font for me, or the letter? cause i think that's actually his handwriting, in which case, i was pretty impressed.

jeeff: 6th Aug 2006 - 17:04 GMT

the letter. but i see that you're right, it is handwriting. man, i need to get off the computer...

I think it's more prominent in Calgary because the people in charge aren't overly committed to ending poverty.

That and the fact that everyone takes the +15 to avoid such encounters. Which is unfortunate.

I should really get around to taking more pictures while I'm out and about. I always have my camera on me but rarely use it. I'll get around to posting on here sometime soon.

Sick of it.: 7th Dec 2006 - 05:07 GMT

In 1997 I began a personal campaign to inform the public of the problems of the Drug problems just waiting to explode. I have been told shut up by people who told me that the city by-and-by is a great city and that I should not be painting it black with the things that happen behind there backs or outside of there social circles. I've been from trying to help people overcome drug addiction to bailing good friends out of trouble. I've been ripped off by my closest friend, my brother and a few other people who taught me to finally shut up about it. Now I am bitter towards "Crack-heads" and addicts in general and refuse to have any contributing remorse for them. When they themselves cannot reconize their immediate need to get help and utilize the help honestly and effectively they are hopeless, and the daunting task is finding the ones who genuinely want help and are willing to do what it takes.

Do you guys ever go across city limits?!?: 6th Feb 2007 - 18:32 GMT

"...but i've never noticed it as much in other cities as i do in calgary. i don't know why that is, but it just seems like the homeless are far more visible here..." What are you talking about!? I just arrived in Calgary a month ago and live downtown. YEs you see some homeless, but not the total freaked out crack and heroin heads you see in Vancouver! I lived in Los Angeles, Hong Kong and I am from the Netherlands.. Trust me: Calgary is a very very clean place compared to most big (or even smaller) cities I've seen..

ANOTHER ARTICLE: 20th Mar 2007 - 21:43 GMT

The same individual has posted new WARNING signs along the Bow River in Calgary:

WARNING:

So long as the CALGARY DROP-IN CENTRE is allowed to harbor drug addicts and chronic criminals it will be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO TRAVEL THE RIVERSIDE BIKE PATHS BETWEEN CENTRE STREET and the ZOO.

These are not "homeless" - they get welfare cheques in Saskatoon, Vancouver and (even) Calgary! THEY ARE TRANSIENTS BY CHOICE, and PREDATORS BY NATURE.

- a message from a concerned East Villager who knows.
