I will always remember all the stories my grandmother told me about wartime New York. Blackouts in case of a surprise Nazi air raid, or perhaps a U-Boat could get close enough to bombard the city. She told me how it was only after the war that she heard about the U-Boats that were apparently caught near the Brooklyn Bridge as the lay in wait for ships to come out of the Brooklyn Navy Yards. I would have loved to see Times Square packed solid with people, yet so dim you can barely see as you look down "The Great White Way" of Broadway.

EG i was about 3 yrs old at wars end but i remember curtains on our windows for blackout because we lived too close to coney island. check out the movie, 'radio days' and there is a great scene where this kid is looking thru binoculars and spots a u-boat.
