Vspomnit': to Remember

I'm going to indulge in some nostalgia.
One year ago I got on a plane with my friend and we headed to her home town, St Petersburg, where we stayed for the month of August.
As there are very few photos of this distinct and beautiful city, I thought I'd add some of my favourites.

image 14031
A favourite spot amongst tourists, Isaac's Cathedral is look-out point for those keen enough to climb the very narrow staircase for about 8 minutes. The view is wonderful and worth it, though you have to sneak in your camera or pay to take photos.

image 14032
The Lomonosov bridge spanning the Fontanka, one of the 60+ (!) canals/rivers of the city... Another favourite for the camera-happy.

image 14033
Sand sculptures spotted the shores of the Neva... I was told it's supposed to be a representation of Nietzsche's Übermensch, which makes sense to me as it certainly looks like the foetus in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

image 14034
Pedestrians; behind is the Winter Palace (now part of the incredibly large Hermitage)

image 14035
A pro-worker frieze--- impressive propagandistic architecture.

image 14036
One of the less ostentatiously conceived metro stations--- lovely and unique are they all, but this one is nicely subdued. I don't remember what station, unfortunately, as we rarely ended up here.

wow, really great. st. petersburg was once stalingrad, but they placed the name back after the dictator died. many russians died fighting the germans. i believe 16 million russians in all died in wwii. i had a friend in the army who was in the russian army and he taught me some russian just in case we had to go to war with them. the war never came and i forgot all the russian. but here is a word i remember, i'll spell it phonetically, 'cock-bush-e-vise' it means 'how are you'. there, you learned something.

Marlo: khoroscho, spasibo! Kak dela?
