Fredericton Transit

- CE - Thursday, July 20th, 2006 : goo

Here, finally, is my article on transit to follow up this and this.

I'll start by showing each style of busses. They're numbered below in order of age.

Every half hour (sometimes greater lengths depending on the day or time) all the busses end their routes and show up downtown in front of the Kings Place Shopping Centre where they load and unload and transfers are made. It works quite well as you're not confused about where a bus is going to end up or where to make transfers. Also, if you're not familiar with the route and you're afraid you got on the wrong bus, you know it will eventually end up at Kings Place where you can transfer to the correct one.

As promised, I will assign a personality to each type of bus. Feel free to give them your own if you don't agree with mine or if you have something better.

Bus 1 is the the same picture that I uploaded in the past article. For some reason, none showed up when I was taking pictures today so I had to repeat it. I've always thought of this bus as the quiet reflective type, it's proud to do it's job and determined to do the best job possible. It's also getting older and is bittersweetly awaiting bus retirement. It will have many good and interesting memories of past routes and passengers.

These busses are my favourite.

I've always thought that bus 2's headlights make it look very sly and almost shifty. I'm not sure how much I trust it as it clunks along. I also think it often feels under appreciated due to the fact that it looks much like bus 1 but squarer and therefore not as interesting. It is also probably a bit disheartened by the people who complain about the bumpier ride it gives. "Give me a break" it says, "I'm doing the best I can, I'm getting old you know!"

Still, there's something I don't trust about it.

The best part about the busses 1 and 2 is that none of them are covered in obnoxious ads that make the ride very uncomfortable and are tacky as all hell. Bus 3 is the largest in number in the fleet and it is my impression that they don't get along very well with the other busses and are quite cliquey. Their headlights also indicate fatigue. I don't blame them as they're the most used busses in the fleet due to the passenger load they're capable of. It must get awful hard on the axles!

Bus 4 is the new kid on the block and was added to the fleet shortly before I moved to Fredericton. They seem very keen on doing their job and are full of energy and enthusiasm. They're also wheelchair accessible which I imagine they're quite proud of. These busses are also being covered in the ads which i'm sure they're not particularly happy about.

Here are some pictures of the obnoxious ads the busses have been forced to wear in the pursuit of the almighty dollar.

Busses waiting to be filled with friendly passengers, worn out from a long hard day at work:

The busses leave to take their loyal passengers to their destinations. They will soon be replaced by others in an unacceptably long amount of time.

I like how the buses are equipped with bike racks.

I was sure I had commented on this article before.

I love the bike racks, just noticed for the first time that they fold down when in use, and stow to the nose of the bus when not in use.

Say, what happened to the pic below, that is also supposed to be the first pic in this article?

If the newest buses are wheelchair accessible, why are there no wheelchair users travelling on them?

Peter: i like this post...
