Very, Very Old Windows

The windows were put in in 1559. Using my powers of translation, I can tell you the inscription, in modern English, reads:
"Richard Dale, Carpenter, Made these Windows by the Grace of God" (I bet you were all struggling with that one)

It's at Little Moreton Hall, a timber building now nearly 500 years old (now a National Trust Museum.) It's nice he got some credit for his work!

Thank you for the translation. Did you major in English to English translation in your schooling?

:D

dale, wasn't he with the band of outlaws known as robin hood and his merry band of theives. he probably left the sherwood forest after they were pardoned by richard the lionheart and went into the window business. but hemade nice looking windows and to think they are still there and not damaged by the wwii, that is something. i have to visit england some day, after all it is our mother country and we are tied to the english people since time began. i met two guys from england back in 1964 in germany. they were travelling around europe with their two female cousins. i of course dated one of the girls and she invited me to go to liverpool to stay with her and she mentioned this fab group of 4 guys in a band and they were the liverpool beatles, soon to be the beatles as we knew them.

That's the guy Jack. I'm sure the guide said the wood came from Sherwood Forest! He was a bit of a turncoat, though, and sometimes used to steal windows from the poor to give to the rich.

Funny you mention The Beatles. The guide did mention that the Beatles recorded a medieval-acoustic set in The Great Hall after a feast in the mid 60's, but it was never released.

You said you'd like to visit Ye-Olde-England. Well there were quite a few American's visiting the site and all seemed very interested in the history. I was more concerned about the fact that I'd been savagely bitten on the thumb by a duck as it relieved me of the remains of my ice-cream cone. (This paragraph is actually true)

Zagg - how did you guess? (I did cheat & Babelfished this one, though)

jeeff: 17th Jul 2006 - 02:53 GMT

it's funny, almost like he had a hunch it'd be around for a looong time. well played, richard dale.
